V6 toyota driveshafts?

;) Well at work today we got a Camry v6 in for mot work. needed a CV boot.. So took it all off and changed the boot J/D. but i had taken it off by undoing the 6 allan bolts around the flange where it bolts up, and that part fell apart:( It consisted of 6 big ball bearings and a carrier. no biggy so i put it back together and bolted it up. now it has locked solid :( so I've taken it off again and can't for the life of me work out why it does this? as its totally floating in twisted bearing tracks:blink:

Has anyone come across this before and is there a certain way to reassemble this end of the CV shaft? a good manual would helpful as we don't have any data on the car. We will suss it but if someone knows please share you knowledge..it will save me finding out the long way round

I think there is a certain way round the carrier goes together. Try taking it back out and turning it around. I had the same problem with the outer joint on the rear of my supra. Once i had taken it apart and switched the carrier around it was OK. I can't remember a 100% on what i actually did but it is certainly easy enough to sort out

thanks lee. have tried the moving the carrier but still locks up. there is now way you take it off from the gearbox. or they would not have given you the 6 Allan bolts...i think it just has to be absolutely in-line and square before you bolt it up..but what i don't get is, what stops the bearings from moving to the back of the carrier and falling out?? maybe its how they twist that keeps them in check??????

wow those are some clever little japs. the twists work against each other to create a uj effect through the movement of the 6 ball bearings. They are also machined as a one way only fit, hence why if you get i slightly wrong they lock up.

every days a school day. but the main thing here is take the shaft off carefully or buy those stretchy CV boots and a cone.
