Conrad
I'm currently with Wanadoo/Orange on their top plan but can only have a max of 2mb download speed. I've tried Sky as they can do 16mb but that's not available to me yet. I've tried a few other companies that offer more than 2mb but they say they cant do it. Why is this? How come some people can have faster speeds than others? I did ask one sales guy and he mumbled somthing about my telephone line being 5km from exchange??? Does anyone know what exactly I'm waiting on for our area to get better speeds?
Ian W
that's what it is mate. it's your phone line rather than your provider. for your area to get better speeds BT would need to upgrade the lines......good luck with the wait lol. i'd just make do with 2mb

Anyone know if Sky are using BT's lines? I'm sure I read somewhere they are installing their own network. I need more than 2mb!!!!

SimonB
So it's the actual lines and not the exchange??? Anyone know if Sky are using BT's lines? I'm sure I read somewhere they are installing their own network. I need more than 2mb!!!! Everyone uses BTs lines into people's houses - the local loop. BT now have to allow other companies access to them though by allowing them to install equipment in their local exchanges. That is what Sky is doing - the local loop to your house is still owned by BT, but the network from the local exchange onwards will be Sky. Normally providers use BTs gear in the local exchange too which they charge a lot for. The reason you're limited to 2mb could be the line itself or the equipment in your local exchange. If it's the line you're buggered unless you can persude BT to upgrade it which is very unlikely. If it's the local exchange you might be in luck when Sky arrives. Jake
So it's the actual lines and not the exchange??? The further the distance from the exchange to your house the poorer the line quality will be. If the line has a certain amount of 'noise' you won't be able to get high-speed ADSL. (When I say noise, the quality of the voice signal is irrelevant, if the digital part of the line is poor you're screwed) Anyone know if Sky are using BT's lines? I'm sure I read somewhere they are installing their own network. afaik All ADSL in the UK is using BT's lines and exchanges. The only way to get higher speed broadband is to get cable, like NTL or TeleWest. I don't know if SkyBroadband is ADSL or Cable. I need more than 2mb!!!!Think yourself lucky, I can't get more than 1mb ADSL here!
Homer
If you can't get a good speed from your landline, then try cable. Companies like NTL can currently offer 10mb, but this is likely to raise to between 30-100mb during 2007 (dependant on the market). The high end package is not as cheap, but in my experience extremely reliable and always has 100% of the max bandwidth available if you are connecting to a 'site' that can handle it. Alan999
I can only get 1.5mb most here spoke to BT about it the other day and ntl will not lay cable round here because its a new estate otherwise i would get that like my brother has and his estate back onto ours:complain:
Wez
To support the higher speeds your line must be resonable and exchange DSLAM upgraded. I have two lines into my house, neither have dial tone and both show faults at approx 70m which is the exchange but my broadband is working fine. I just did a speed test on adslguide and i am getting spot on what i have ordered.
wkdboi2005
Also you will find the ADSL 'MAXdsl!' As it's called in the trade is very flakey so you may not always get 6mb or 5mb as we ourselves have found out speeds range from 52kbps to 6.5mbps. Good luck with it though
Muffleman
Think yourself lucky, I can't get more than 1mb ADSL here! Pfft, think yourself lucky mate, I can only get 512k - unless of course it's slightly windy, or rainy, or the cat farts, or a butterfly flaps it's wings in Japan, and then it goes a bit wafty I think I'm about 7k from the exchange tho. Conrad
Think I wont be looking at more than I already have then. My house is out in the sticks, plus Cable was never installed down our road (country lane). Thinking about it though, when we moved in we had no BT line. BT came out and literally dug half a mile of road up from a BT antenna that's down our road (It kinda looks like a pylon) I wonder if that has an exchange? I know when I asked BT why they didn't just us the existing lines our neighbours use and they said the signal was rubbish. I'll just wait on Sky me thinks.
