The sun are running the story tomorrow saying the car was doing 315mph when it crashed, that's just plain crazy. Really hope he pulls through.

Im not defending The Sun, but Sky News are saying the car is theoretically capable of 370mph.

Hope he's ok and makes a fully recovery.

It was at an airfield in york so unlikely to have any crash barriers

It's the same airfield that TOTB is held on... There ain't no crash barriers there, but there is lots of soft-ish grass and fairly large run-offs so it could have been worse.

Hope he pulls through. He does seem like a genuine guy and obviously loves his job.

Hey, I'm a new member here, but thought this may be of interest to you guys.

Sorry if some of it has already been mentioned above.

At approximately 5:45pm BST (British Summer Time) on 20 September 2006 Richard Hammond was injured in a car crash while filming for Top Gear at the former RAF Elvington airfield near York. He is said to be in a stable condition in hospital. He was piloting a Jet powered "Vampire" car, capable of travelling at 300mph, in an attempt to break the UK land speed record. He is being treated at the specialist neurological hospital Leeds General Infirmary and is currently in a critical condition. BBC reports suggest that he was air-lifted from the crash scene unconscious. North Yorkshire Police have said that they "received a report via the fire service of a male person trapped in an overturned jet car which had been driven on the airfield."

Sky News reports that he was driving a Vampire rocket car powered by a Rolls Royce Orpheus Turbo-Jet Engine; the very same car that currently holds the landspeed record at 300.3mph. The Sun newspaper reports that Richard was travelling at speeds up to 315mph when the crash took place.

ITV News reported that Hammond had broken the land speed record and was on a last run, filming extra scenes for Top Gear, when the accident took place. Hammond's family are with him, along with doctors and Top Gear representatives who were there when the accident took place.

BBC News has since reported that Hammond's condition is "stable".

Latest update from the BBC site:

Mr Hammond had been driving a dragster-style car capable of reaching 300mph at the former RAF airfield in Elvington, near York.

Former firefighter Dave Ogden, who runs private firm Event Fire Services, was one of the first people at the scene of the crash.

He said: "We were down there with Top Gear who were filming him trying to break the British land speed record.

"On the previous run, the car had just gone over 300mph but I am not sure if it had broken the record.

"They had just done one more run and were planning to finish when it veered off to the right.

"One of the parachutes had deployed but it went on to the grass and spun over and over before coming to a rest about 100 yards from us."

He said his crew and an ambulance that was already on the airfield rushed over and found the car upside down and "dug in" to the grass.

Mr Ogden said he felt for a pulse and heard Mr Hammond breathing before the emergency crews worked together to turn the car the right way up and then cut him free.

He added: "He was regaining consciousness at that point and said he had some lower back pain. But he was drifting in and out of consciousness a little bit."
