I heard he was doing about 280mph on the news, but it cant be good if they have taken him to Leed because of the special neurological unit any high speed crash has the potential to be very bad for internal injuries they are bad enough when you see crashes at 80+mph

Richard Hammond, one of the presenters of TV's Top Gear programme, is reportedly in critical condition following a car crash.

Mr Hammond was hurt while filming an edition of the show and taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

He was reportedly trying to set a new land speed record for England in a jet-powered Vampire car when it overturned.

Mr Hammond was said to have been reaching speeds of up to 280mph as the accident happened.

Firefighter Dave Ogden, who witnessed the crash, told Sky News that the 36-year-old presenter was able to speak as he was taken out of the wreckage of the car.

Inspector Mike Thompson, of North Yorkshire Police, said officers were dealing with the incident at the airfield northeast of York where the filming was taking place.

He said: "At 5.45pm this evening we received a report via the fire service of a male person trapped in what was described as an overturned jet car which had been driven on the airfield.

"The male occupant has received serious injuries and has been airlifted to hospital at Leeds."

A spokeswoman for the BBC, which produces Top Gear, said: "The incident happened quite recently and the focus of our attention is on Richard at this stage."

Mr Hammond, who lives near Cheltenham with his wife Amanda and their two daughters, has also presented Sky's Brainiac and shows including Time Commanders and Petrolheads.

BBC news says that the camera crew say Hammond walked away from the accident.

Obviously he could have internal inhuries that weren't immediatelt apparent.

Saw him at Top Gear and he was so down to earth. He spent all his time off camera with his wife and children.

Hope he come through this.

I thought the BBC said a member of the crew reported that he 'walked to the air ambulance' not walked away from the accident?

I stand to be corrected though.

Regardless of the details, this is really bad news as he seems like such a good bloke.

Hope he gets through it ok.

The fireman who pulled him out told Sky news that it rolled over 7-8 times and landed upside down and his head was in the soil after clearing the soil away so he could breath, the fire crew and camera crew flipped the car, the, managed to get him onto a spine board. Im a 100% sure he didnt walk into the air ambulance after crashing at 280mph.

Thats bad news! I saw the fireforce jet car crash at the japshow last year, that was a 200mph impact and martin hill walked out of it with a broken finger nail. The safety systems in those things are second to none. I hope the hamster is ok. :(

I've deleted bits that have already been quoted.
