As a snooty elitist who believes you get only what you pay for I wouldn't buy a plasma under 2k.

I'm with Red to an extent, although I'd say 1k not 2k! ;) My aunty bought an unknown brand LCD from Currys and had to take it back 3 times to be replaced for one reason or another. In the end she bought a Samsung and has had no problems since.

For cheap but brand name TV's check out this link http://www.clearance-comet.co.uk/

Ebay style bidding for Comet stock that is ex display, refurbed, cosmetically damaged etc. Some real good deals to be had.

Oh dear God! Why would anyone buy an LCD?

I correct myself. As a snooty elitist I would not buy an LCD. For any money.

Hmmm. I've got a 37" JVC LCD TV that I got from Gamer.

I paid like 900 for it but he paid about £1700 for it I think. I've got to say I'm not actually very impressed with it. The picture quality is poor on scenes with movement, or watching the footy. The picture kind of smears.

The model I have actually got rave reviews when it first came out earlier this year but like I said, it's not 'all that'

dont touch techwood - absolute crap

i boughta plasma tv and the picture quality was terrible plus it went wrong from day one - in the end after 6 months the damn thing went in for repair and never came back. i bought a philips plasma in the end and was amazed at the difference in quality

you only get what you pay for

LCD & Plasmas are shit for footie and fast moving pics no matter how much you pay im affraid beacuse of the way they are made. Would be best getting a HD ready rear projection. You can get some now that aint much wider than LCD/Plasmas anyway and the pic qual is better. Oh and my x had a 6grand plasma that was no bettwer than the on i have in the front room that cost just over 2k and it was supposed to be one of the best money can buy but it was just the same with the same dragging on footie etc.

If you want a good picture search around for places selling off the Toshiba Picture Frame 2 models.

You'll pay a few hundred quid and will get a better picture than nearly all but the most expensive Plasma/LCD sets.

But, they are big and can't be hung on the wall. Are you after WOW points or do you want really great image quality?

LG make the internals for many of today top brands. I know a guy who said he'd never buy a cheap, shitty LG and then bought another brand. He was gutted when a little research showed it to be a rebranded LG product. He then started to notice loads of faults in the pic quality where previously he'd been raving about it.

Twit.

Plasmas/LCD are like most electronics these days...

There are only a few real manufacturers of these actually units, and the likes of Grundig/Liteon/Mustek for example put the packaging around the screen.

The lesser known brands usually contain the same internals, however the likes of Sony and co get first stab at the quality control.

Yep I'll second that.

I have a picture frame 2 awesome telly. And weighing around 80kg no thieving dogbummer is ever going to get it.;)

I paid about £1050 for mine about 3 years ago. They were touted as being the best normal tube TV for the money in the 36" range.

I still think there is something better about normal normal TV's over the LCD and plasmas.

Although we do have a Dell 19" LCD in the bedroom. That is a great LCD but it does have a slower response time of 19ms than most of the more expensive LCD/Plasma's. But you don't notice it until the footies on. But even then it's still good.

Dogbummer! I'm so going to be using that at work tomorrow. :D

I agree. We've had a few (plasmas) on home trial over the last few years. Two I had high hopes for (Pioneer and Panasonic) and while the pics were undoubtedly good they just weren't (in our opinion) as good as our Toshiba CRT.

When we play R1 DVDs through it's prog. scan mode and also use the Component Video output from the DVD player the image quality is often breathtaking. We were watching S2 of Lost and honestly there was one close up of Locke that was more detailed than real life!

If you want good football on a LCD or plasma, you need the sky HD box. using a 720 progressive signal works wonders and crystal clear for sport. 1080i isnt as good for sport as the interlaced signal wont refresh fast enough. Now if you could find a 1080P signal you'd be landed. The future is higher def.

For now rather than pay sky a ranson I suggest you try a decent scaler, worked great on my plasma.
