ChrisSZ
There I was, driving home from work this evening. The only thing out of the ordinary was theat the oil light had stayed on (did this the other day for a while too) - I knew the oil levels were ok so didn't panic too much. Crawling along behind a couple of tractors when all of a sudden the engine died:( I have fuel and I definately have a spark at the coil - what are tha chances of the problem being dizzy cap/rotor arm related??? Got the car AA Relay'd home now at least but now I need to know where to start looking for the problem. Where's the best place to buy a new dizzy cap & rotor arm and how much am I looking at?? Any ideas gratefully received:)
terribleturner
Mate mine did this. Turned out to be the Oil Pump. I ignored it too but things went pair shaped when there was a very loud knocking which indicated bottom end
Pig
could the oil not be blocked somewhere? causing a slow and horrible death that way?
ChrisSZ
No slow horrible death - the car still turns over fine! It just sounds as if there is either no fuel or no spark.
Dave F
Hope its nothing too bad fella
ChrisSZ
I'm sure it's nothing mechanical/engine related since there were no horrible noises first and all fluids are still in place. As I said, she turns over like the king lead from the dizzy is disconnected?
keron
dizzy cap and rotor from dealer was between £20-£30 when i brought the pair about a mth ago.... also might be worth checking the big fuses in the fuse box...i think there is a white/cream one (could be yellow) as if it blows then it wont start! you can see if its blown by looking in the top of it (has a clear lid)
ChrisSZ
Cheers Keron, already checked all fuses and swapped relays around - no joy:(
Matt Harwood
If I get out of work at a reasonable time tomorrow, I'll pop over if you like. We can both scratch our heads and take sharp intakes of breath together

I'll PM you my number
Matt Harwood
Replied.
Nick
Can you start the car now? Does it have RLTC? My car started to cut out for no apparent reason, and Matt traced it to the RLTC fuse which caused this when it got hot. The standard one is (or maybe was, if they've changed it now) a peice of crap. He changed it, and no more problem....
ChrisSZ
No RLTC - all fuses OK

ChrisSZ
LOL cheers mate - hopefully one ignorant chin (mine) and one switched-on chin (Matts) will be scratched enough to figure it out - I'll hold the light and scratch whilst Matt does the real work. Just a gopher me
ChrisSZ
We now have a code 12 = crank position sensor. Can't find the wiring or the sensor though
ChrisSZ
We now have a code 12 = crank position sensor. Can't find the wiring or the sensor though (edited) Is this the crank position sensor?? Found up behind the crank pylley between the alternator and the block and bolted to the underside/back of the water pump?
Ric
thats the timing belt tenstioner isnt it?
ChrisSZ
Errr, apparently so! Just been informed that the N/A doesn't have a crank position sensor. So now I need to figure out what a code 12 is on an N/A.
markssupra
The sensors are inside the distributor. Check the attachments for a description of error code 12. You have sensors for crankshaft angle and engine speed.
