The two photos showing the extremes both show ugly people, ugly because of their size, a size 10, 12, 14, 16 is probably more normal. We are given this image by the fashion industry to be so thin that you make yourself ill.

Thats a misconception though, is that thin is beautiful and fat is ugly. But the problem is, is that skinny girls can blend into the background, whereas if you are over weight, you do tend to be centre of attention, and thats why more and more pressure is put on people to be skinnier?

That makes sense in my head

I understand what you are saying, I think!! But I feel that the point you are making is about their personality not whether they should be fat or thin. If I am skinny I want to blend in and not make a fuss or if I am fat I am the life and soul of the party, its generalising the two extremes. The real problem is the fashion industry, the media and the diet mongers (weight watchers et al) have a vested interest in portraying the "ideal" image of a woman as a stick thin parody of a woman. We pander to this an it self perpetuates, the spanish have made the first real step against this "stickthin" fascism

Sorry I meant that thin girls have the ability to blend in, whereas if you are over weight, you stand out, and therefore have more negativity thrown towards you. So whilst I agree that fashion magazines, tv presenters, actors and actresses are promoting that thinner is better, I also feel that you can't escape from a fat person walking down the street.

OMG my grammer was terrible in that post.

just to add I also agree with you to an extent that larger girls tend to be more fun at parties, but I think thats because they are comfortable with their body image.

I'm not sure how many girls are happy with their body image fullstop though. I know plenty of chubs who are miserable and plenty of skinnies who seem happy enough. Ask them to change something about themselves though and I'm sure it will be to make something smaller or bigger.

sad isn't it, so long as your a reasonable size, be it slim, average or large I think there are many more important things to worry about and I think it is sad that society has made it such a big deal tbh

Quite, so I don't understand why you think chubbier people have a better body image.

Something max said which made sense. I don't necessarily think that chubbier people have a better body image, but I do agree that that they seem less body conscious then a really skinny girl, who only seems interested in flaunting their bodies, all because society says that to be skinny is more beautiful

arn't they? I am lol :D

no seriously, sure I'm not perfect but I think I am what I am and I don't worry about what I am not...

okay most people. :)

We are constantly being bombarded by images that stick thin is good either on the TV or in magazines, yet to attain this state many of the models in the fashion industry starve themselves or use illegal substances to suppress their hunger. This state is not healthy over the long term and skews the body image arguement that this is what woman should attain to rather than could.attain to

Hmm. I'm not sure they are saying that people should be fat... they are saying that they are banning models who are unhealthily underweight, same as they wouldn't use models who were unhealthily overweight.

I don't think they are saying that they are going to parade elephants down the catwalk in their place, just ones that aren't about to drop dead.
