TrevS
Hi Guys I am going to have to get my rear brake discs and pads changed on my supra very soon as there is hardly anything left of the rear discs. I spoke to toyota and they wan £160 for a set of discs plus £90 fitting. Also another garage i contacted told me that they also would want £90 for fitting. So can anyone tell me how easy they are to change myself, what i will need and what to look out for when doing it. If it saves me £90 then ill give it a go. Also its an NA supra if this makes any difference, as i know they have smaller brakes than the TT's Cheers
SatSport
if you need N/A pads, still have these http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=81863
adman
Trev, brakes are pretty simple to change.... you will need a 14mm spanner, a 17mm spanner, a torque wrench (or breaker bar if no wrench is available), two 3/8 jack screw bolts and a tapomoter (mallet)and a tube of copper grease... I know this as I just changed mine, but be warned.... the discs will not come off without a fight and make sure you release the tension in the handbrake before starting... if everything goes hunky-dorey it is an easy job but if things start to go tits up, then well you may have wished to take it to the garage in the first place... TrevS
I am going to be changing both discs and pads. I bought some pads last week brand new for £15 which i thought was a bargain but can't seem to find any discs for sale other than from toyota who want £ 73.98 each, any suggestions? ManwithSupra
I had a 3rd party garage want to charge me £550 for changing the rear discs and pads lol They wanted £125 per disc (i can get them or £88) £50 each for each pad set (i can get them for £25) and the rest was labour - i told them to push it up their rectum (to put it clinically) I mean £200 for labour dont think so !! rik
I'm going to take on my brakes sooner or later. My cars been standing for a year and a half so i'm expecting a fight. I put new front discs and pads on the missis Punto at the weekend, took me an hour and cost under £40. If on;y the supra would be the same Doesn't the rears on the supra have a drum for the handbrake? I'm sure i've read something about this somewhere! adman
yeah, the rear discs have an extended flange that acts as the drum for the handbrake, thats why when you want to remove the dicsc you need to slacken off the handbrake or else you are fighting the friction of the handbrake shoes against the drum on the disc... thats where the tapometer comes in handy... I've used these guys for disks in the past, good service. I think the link are for the disks you need ie 307mm x 16mm (note price is for a pair) even though listed under GS300...... Gordon F
two 3/8 jack screw bolts Unlikely to be 3/8 on a jap car. From memory, I thing they are 8mm, possibly 6mm. Be very careful about stripping the thread on the drums. Also, it may be handy to have a set of handbrake pins, springs and locking washers with you before you start this job, as it is quite easy to damage them
Terminator
You can not just plug and play with discs. Dont for getyou must check for disk run out in each of the five possible orientations of the disc relate to the hub and pick the smallest run out.
