jot_ie
I was there in Feb, A special Birthday treat from my wife, 40 you know. Flew into Pizza, not a great city, but the piazza where the leaning tower is is really fantastic, Other buildings there are the baptistry and cathedral, spectacular themselves. We hired a car and drove to bologna that evening Next day, lamborghini, pagani, ferrari, and ducatti factories. Petrol overload lol Modena, (near maranello) is a lovely city, as is a small town called luca, near Pizza, especially the old part. Disapointed not to have seen florence. If you really want to see thye buildings then nothing compares to rome to be honest. I think you will enjoy Italy wherever part you decide to go to. Thorin
Went to Venice not long ago (http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=77273). Really nice place, would love to visit again. 3 full days you'd see everywhere on the island easy, possibly more if you wanted to visit some of the islands like Murano for example. A guy from work was traveling around Italy on his honeymoon at the same time. He went to Rome, saw the vatican etc. which he said was good, Pizza he said was only interesting for the tower and that was it. Florence he said was lovely. RIJ8631
Went to Rome in June this year. The architecture was absolutely fantastic -every corner you turned there were fantastic buildings ranging over the last 2000+ years. We stayed on the Via Nationale which is probably the main street - central for everything. We went down to Pompeii, which was also fascinating. Quite a pricey country though, but i'm sure you will enjoy it. Cheers Ian
Bobbeh
I went about 12 years ago, beautiful country. We did a long weekend in Roma (well worth it, simply too much history) and then a 10 day sting in Sorrento, south of Napoli, around the Amalfi coast which is breathtaking.. visited Mt Versuvius, Pompei, Herculaneum, Capri etc. Want to go back

MARTIN R
popped the question in Rome a year or so ago, probably the most beautiful and romantic city in the world imo
SupraAyf
Cortina is a great place to go m8. It sits just below the peaks of the Alps and is absolutely out of this world to visit. I have been mountaineering there a few times, including the glacier trek. Great choice mate – really is! I should say now that there’s no need to take the girlfriend cos you’ll pick up a nice bird when you get there!! :eyebrows:
Charlotte
around the Amalfi coast I was reading an article about this the other day, aparently some of the best 'heavenly' views in the world, i'd love to go.

montezumola
Flew into Pizza, not a great city, but the piazza where the leaning tower is is really fantastic, I've been to Italy many times but never to Pizza! Just eaten lots of them out there .... Was it 'Quattro Stagioni' Airport you flew into?
Kittyclaws
Been to many coastal ports in Italy, best is Venice, Brindisi is not bad. Bari is a sh#t hole and as for Naples, well lets not go there.Taranto hates anyone british because we bombed the hell out it during WWII . they would come to the jetty and spit at our ship etc, but that was mostly the old people
GetawayDriver
my mum is italian, spent loads of time over there. rome is the place if you want history and architecture, will have to search hard for authentic food though ... you can also day trip to vatican city from rome. also consider florence if you're looking for a bit of romance. personally i think venice is overated, very geared towards the tourists. check out http://www.greatbuildings.com/places/rome.html
Thorin
personally i think venice is overated, very geared towards the tourists. I don't think it's overrated at all. But I half agree about the tourist thing, there's only so many gift shops selling carnival masks and Murano glass you can look at... But get away from San Marco and Rialto area to see some of the real Venice. Will have to go to Rome and Florence if we go back to Italy I think. montezumola
You'll love Rome - especially from an architectural point of view. The Pantheon, Colosseum, Roman Forum (check out the 3 enormous roofted vaults of the Basilica - simply immense), St Peters, Trevi Fountain, Victor Emmanuel National Monument ... the list goes on! Walking around Rome and discovering it on foot is the best way to appreciate the city, in my experience. Arrrghh, I wanna go back now ... _Rob_
Cheers Jay, great site! theres some good prices on there! you ever used the rail system over there?
RIJ8631
the rail system is quite straight forward. We travelled from Rome to Sorrento via Naples. It was no problem at all. Very similar to here just turn up at the station and tell them where you want to go. Tripadviser is a great website -it is usually very up to date with comments - have used it for planning several holidays and found the customer comments to be very accurate cheers ian
Andy-No-Knee
Italy.... Well my mum came from there and I have been arround it a wee bit. Roma - Lots to see and price wise is about the same as London. Things so see, well get a couple of guide books and they will give you it all. I liked the Rough Guide and then the Roman Anticquities Guide books. The catacoombs are also well worth a look. Best way to view, well what is fun is to go to the Patheon and then get a horse and carrage ride around the city, seeing all the sites. If it is just the 2 of you you can haggle with them for about E100. Then when you have had the tour you can then start at one end (we chose the Vatican) and then walk through the lot. The Piazza Nuervono, etc. To see it all you will be hard pushed for 3 days, and that doesnt include going into any museums liek the Vatican/Cisteen Chapel. One thing is the way the designers used the views when making allys. You can usually see something worth seeing poking its head around a corner Forenza (Florence) - Again like Roma lots to see. I have spent a week there and only just touched the surface. Just as you see one thing something else makes it view known. Venice. - I liked it but the smell was a bit much (like blocked drains) a good book to read before hand is 'Hanibal' where Hanible Lecter lives there for a few years, and gives you an idea of some of the things to go and see. Pisa - Apart from the leaning Tower is boring. Lucca - Located in Garfanyana and has 114? churches in it and most are dated from the Renasance. It is also one two town left in all of Europe with its defensive walls intact. you could spend a weekend here and not get bored. If your into views as well follow the Al Serchio (In Garfanyana, Tuscany) river up into its valley and see some of the small provintial towns and villages. There are too many to mention but there is lots to see. We were there in Sept for 2 weeks and will prob be back to visit my family in the sumer next year. I love it!
