Please help! Dead 2nd turbo?

Got the new exhaust fitted today, and loved it to bits. The car felt a hell of a lot more responsive and pulled quite a bit harder too - all in all happy days.

That was until this afternoon when, giving it some beans of a roundabout, there was a faint fluttery / tinkley sound and no boost at all after 4k - the boost gausge just sits at 0.

Whenever the engine hits 4k revs or there-abouts, there's a faint fluttery sound and a complete drop off in all boost, but no smoke.

The first turbo still boosts but seems to be struggling a bit, coming in later and not generating boost as quick.

The engine is completely stock, standard airbox though god only knows what the previous owner did with it - previously had a Blitz SUS kit on.

I've had a quick look at the EGCV VSV and actuator but all the hoses seem okay, as do the hoses throughout the engine bay. The bay is still too warm to be prodding around in right now!

So please help guys, you all have much more technical knowledge about Supras than me. I hope the turbo hasn't died, otherwise she'll have to be SORNd til after xmas, as we're still saving for our December honeymoon :(

:edit: thought I'd change the thread title :(

dont take any notice of bobs bonet vent pig i think he is j spec.:D

Yep, J-spec. Unfortunately the previous owner put the bonnet vent on. There's no hole either, but I can't take it off cos he used what seems like superglue

Thanks for the comments guys, I'll go search for the ebv doodah

WOuld't have thought so, as the first turbo is still boosting - just not as easily as before. I'm going to take a good look this evening, take out the air box etc.; zed's thread from earlier (I found it! :D) seems very similar to mine, so I'll try there first.

I really hope its a plumbing problem mate. However, the tinkley sound you describe reminded me of my ceramic blades going down my exhaust :( .

Good luck, hope its nothing serious.

The thing that worries me is that the 1stcat is still in - but nothing seems to be overheating at least.

I've got a JSpec second turbo, also lying on my garage floor, spare at the moment, if you want it make me an offer...

Cheers mate, I'll bear you in mind :)

Small update!

The Wastegate VSV and EGCV VSV are out and sitting in front of me, and I'm gonna check them in accordance with the manual once I figure out where I put it . . .

The EGCV actuator looks fine and still moves smoothly. I have replaced the rubber hoses to the wastegate and EGCV actuators and the surrounding vacuum hoses, as they had gone brittle and cracked at the ends.

The wastegate VSV seems like it's dodgy.

Variable resistance ranging from 196 to 1k ohms (even after pins had been cleaned and filed), no ground to the body, and leaking between ports. However, when I blew through it and switched the 12v across it, it switched perfectly. Taking th ereadings again, there was no leakage and resistance was down to 24 Ohms - loose connection possibly? Too much crap inside?

:edit: Holy shite! The wastegate VSV is £220 from Toyota!

EGBV VSV checked and cleaned and EGBV pipes all OK. Reinstalled VSVs with new pipes where necessary and took her out for a spin.

Still fubar'd.

I checked readings mre carefully, and I'm getting 0.5bar boost from turbo 1, but not til around 3200 revs. When turbo 2 should come online, boost drops - but seems to be present at roughly 0.1bar?!

The auto box also seems to playing silly-buggers now; it's not changing down or up where normally it would.

Still no smoke, but some fluttery sounds still audible.

HELP!!!

All actuators working fine, all VSVs and actuator valves working fine. Also checked the 2nd turbo to see if the exhaust housing was cracked.

Tried to get the intake section off #2 but the bolts ain't coming off without a bit of help, and that help can't fit in that small space! (many thanks to Greg @ Turbofit for talking me through it today!)

Guess I've got to bite the bullet and get some quotes for fitting the 2nd turbo - I just haven't got time myself, as well as a having a crappy gravel drive and even crappier jack :(

bob,

By the sounds of it you know your way around the engine far more than me but I feel its worth mentioning this...

I had a similar problem when i first got mine i.e. the 2nd turbo wasn't doing much. It turned out to be a small hose that popped off around the back (between the block and dash but to the right a bit). it was only a small hose and very tight and dark round the back but once connected again it totally fixed the problem and 2nd turbo worked again.

hope its that simple for you. I'm sure you've already looked at this and sorry for not being very technical.

What? 220 quid for a VSV, feck I need two. My EGBV vsv was the same when checking continuity, all over the shop but worked with 12v but I still think it's enough to stop it working properly as it gets a pulsed output from the ECU which wont like dodgy connections.

I believe the wastgate vsv gets a pulsed output too allowing it to open progressively.

Gonna put it all back together and try TTC but I'm not holding my breath tbh.

Try it in mechanical TTC by wrapping wire around the IACV and EGCV linkages and blocking off the boost feed to the pressure tank and see what boost you get. If it's still not working then remove the boost feed to the wastegate VSV and block it off, then drive the car (very carefully) and check your boost.
