mkirby
Plasma is cheaper but the quality isn't as good lol you obviously havnt seen any decent plasmas for me plasma until i see a decent LCD over 37" Mike
Thorin
Somebody told me above 37" you're best off with a plasma. I know nothing of these things though, I would say make sure the one you get can do true 1080p. Most will only do 1080i and I think 42" is the smallest screens that you can get true 1080p on. GeordieSteve
I'm sure LCD is still better quality? It's if the extra ca$h is worth it
Darren-K
well mate, my plasma is away being fixed after 6 months. however things to be aware of,. plasma: expect to pay more for a HD plasma, this will give a much better picture ( when high definiation is available 100% ),.however on some plasma`s shadows can look a bit iffy,. also ,. some need to be re-gassed anytime from 1 year to 5 years after being used., this can cost £250. a 42" plasma can be had from around £799,. but i would go for a name brand such as Sony or LG ,or Philips etc, preferably Sony or Toshiba., for brands like these HD should be standard and expect to pay around £1400 to £1700.,if they sell an extended warranty with the set go for it. L.C.D: an LCD set this size will be double the price of a plasma,. expect to pay around £2500 for a good LCD set, things that can go wrong include individual pixels going,. or a light (strip light) on the inside die,. 1 or 2 pixels are not covered in the warranty but the lights inside are., again go with extended warranty. Nathman
Can't go wrong with a Samsung plasma screen! I have had my 42" for four years now and people still comment on how good the picture quality is:d
Mike M
some need to be re-gassed anytime from 1 year to 5 years after being used., this can cost £ It's physically impossible to regass a plasma screen as they are factory sealed once the gas is injected. I've still to see an LCD with convincing colours that dont look artificial. I've had a Toshiba plasma for over 3years now and altho it's old it still gives a better picture than my 32" LCD. Things to consider when buying:- panel brightness = 500cd/m2 and above is good. Contrast ratio = (the difference between blacks and whites) most plasmas are 3000:1 and higher. LCD's struggle to make 1000:1. Screen resolution = the higher the figure then the sharper the image. This is what LCD's do best but HD plasmas are already high res. plasmas can be viewed at any angle while LCD's change colour. LCD's struggle to display fast motion. Both can suffer from screen burn but i've never seen it on mine. As for longevity a plasma apparantly takes over 30000hrs for the screen to become half as bright so a good 10 years of 12hrs daily use. I'm not sure about LCD lamp life think it's slightly longer. Matsushita screens are very good and are in Panasonics and i think Samsungs now. Pioneer and Fujitsu make the best i reckon. Make sure you ask about the warranty conditions over dead pixels. Too many and they have to replace the screen. Hope this helps as it's a minefield, I was in the exact same boat as you 3 years ago when some plasmas were very poor. Rob
I always thought the re-gassing was urban myth, meant to unsettle those posh enough to afford plasma tellys when they first came out at £15,000.

Mike M
What video input are you using mate? Big tv's and the yellow composite input give a crap picture. Best video input is component, i'm using S-video and the difference is really noticeable. That's probably whats wrong with my LCD since it's just getting a composite scart feed.
