RedM
Do stock tubbies make a sound from about 2k and up? I get a kinda whistling sound as tubbie one spools. It is clearly audible in the car. Is that okay? Death whine. Does this sound like a deep, low, spooky whistling sound as turbos spool up? I ask as a friend of mine has just had his turbo blow and had this noise prior to it. Worryingly, mine made this noise last winter but only until the car warmed up. Not heard it for months now. Thoughts?
Bobbeh
Yes its normal for a whistle (spooling noise) to come from stock turbos.. as long as its not a nasty whine you're ok

Bobbeh
I wouldnt know.. I guess healthy turbos would be high pitched subtle noise.. whereas knackered would be more droney? Check out the deathwine.wav in the multimedia section.
supRo
Jspec tubbies do make this kinda noise. Has the noise suddenly started?
imi
I remember Homer once said that the Jspec ceramics dont make the death wine noise...its only the steel tubbies.
RedM
Jspec tubbies do make this kinda noise. Has the noise suddenly started? Well, my friend has an S13 and it started at the weekend. My very similar noise started last winter and went when the weather warmed up. A search for 'death whine' reveals that it could be a resonance in the intake system. Hmm.... mikeyb10supra
Define 'nasty'. you'll know.....its normally only UK turbos that do it as well not heard of a j-spec set doing it... http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/death_whine/death_whine.wav as bobbeh said j-specs usually shatter and fly out through the exhaust

Ric
http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/death_whine/death_whine.wav This is the dreaded whine M I thought i had this too, but lucky me it was just resonance in the intake cold, at about 2-3k revs
JohnA
The JSpec turbos have the ceramic wheels detach from the shaft way before they can start whining. That's one of the reasons UKSpec turbos can be pushed harder.
