Ark
The wierd thing is, rays are normally very timid - beautiful creatures, I've taken loads of photos whilst diving, some from mere inches away, never had a problem. You've really got to be poking at them to provoke them, and normally they'll still just swim away. (Not that I advokate poking poisonous animals, or indeed any animals. Look but don't touch is my diving policy)
Fifty
Tragic, yes. Accident, no. Stingrays do not just come along and sting people. They have to be provoked and it is not just a case of gently touching them. The saying goes: If you play with fire you will get burnt at some point. Tragic news, feel for his family; another good guy gone while the arseholes live on. Going to take particular note because Im going to mstingray alley off Barbuda next week!! Still, it is a sad loss, and dramatics aside he did a lot of conservation work.

raymanuk
Shame an absolute credit to his country. I always thought it would be something a bit more deadly rather than a timid stingray. It starts....

Matt H
The guy was a legend and had alot of respect for deadly animals, its unfortunate that he got hit in the heart, otherwise he would be alive now
SupraStar 3000
its almost poetic. His heart was with the animals Yet its was the animals that struck his heart!
Kittyclaws
So sad to hear this, thoughts go out to his family really sad to hear this Loved the way he would say: "This little beauty is one of the most venomous snakes in the WORLDDDD" for every snake he came across. RIP Steve Lol,, yes, and "Crikey"
SuperSupra
Just found out about this and I'm absolutely gutted. I loved the guy, he was a real living legend, and over such a short space of time he became world renowned as THE snakes and croc guy. They were his main love, but he laughed in the face of any dangerous animal while giving them the respect they deserved. Massive loss, both to his family and friends, and to everyone really as I personally found his tv shows the most entertaining wildlife programmes ever. Poor wife and kids, terrible loss to them more than anything. He was obviously a very caring person, both to the animals and his family. R.I.P. Steve Irwin, you'll be sorely missed
tbourner
I suppose his wife will carry on as they did though? Wasn't he teaching her how to deal with crocs and stuff?
SuperSupra
I suppose his wife will carry on as they did though? Wasn't he teaching her how to deal with crocs and stuff? Yeah the whole time he showed her things, no doubt she is capable of taking over, but there's two kids involved too so makes things tricky. I'm sure the zoo type place they had will manage, but hate to think of what they're going through right now.

Incredible that it was the actual barb itself that killed him - right through the heart, nothing to do with the venom.

Tourniquet
Yeah just saw this on MSN's home page - strange to say this but I'm a bit gutted and shocked. Thought the guy was a legend and made the conservation thing more interesting and was a credit to Aus. He's to me the Jack Black of the animal kingdom with his passion for these animals that Black has to ROCK N F'ING ROLL lol. Always thought he'd get munched by something a bit more street than a Stingwray though, almost ironic. Thoughts to his family - I have a 3 year old and couldn't imaguine not being around for her.
