Thorin
I'm glad it's been delayed, more chance for them to get things right and more games available on release. Last thing they need is rushing things out and risking problems with half the blue-ray drives.

Pixelfill
FFS! Japan release is the same though - so Nic will be the best bet me thinks. Question for Marco or Rayman (or anyone else who *Knows*) Is the PS3 going to be region locked, or will it be the same as PSP and work in any region. If so get the Nicster Pre ordering Mike
Pete
It seems not - http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=ps3+region+lock&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 ...but until it's released, who knows? [edit] Apparently Sony have announced it won't be locked. http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=30509 Yay!

Nic
Edit: - Movies will be region locked. Japan and UK are both DVD region 2. Saying this Japan is NTSC not PAL, not sure how this effects things. I think you can get convertors though. Any experts out there on the subject? MR.B
What's the 'pre order' situation like there then Nic?
Thorin
No suprise with the release date, US and Japan always get it before this backward continent I sense a lot of buiness coming your way Nic! Apparently it's due to the "diversity of the PAL region", Japanese and English would cover most NTSC users but there's a hell of a lot more for PAL. Of course that could just be bollocks. Bobbeh
No its a load of bollocks They're only targetting the biggest markets, its the same for anything, like cars for example. PAL, thats the UK and Japan isnt it? NTSC is mainly in the US.. but dont most new TVs these days support both?
Pixelfill
Ermm, PAL and NTSC are standard definition television concepts, If the PS3 has HDMI, and generates HDTV signals this is irrelevant isn't it? I can see that the movies might be region locked (though I see no purpose in this) but as for television standards getting in the way I don't buy that at all, this is all good for group buys. raymanuk
I think America is being released first purely to compete against the Xbox360. I read that the reason for the delay is a problem with the BlueRay Diodes and that they can only fix it in time to release to one region and Japan. Clarkey
All games are coded on PC's, but compiled into the console platform. Also all graphics are made on PC's. When I make a track for example it only takes about 2 minutes to export from the PC to a Playstation2. It's not a normal PS2 as you can buy in the shops, they're a bit chunkier See picture... Marco is 100% spot on here. I went for a job at a company called Renderware. This company make a abit of middleware SW between the HW of the console & the developers. An API if you will. The job entailed me coding test harnesses in C or C++ on a PC Windows Visual C++ and then being run on the target platform I would imagine for consoles like Playstation .. as AFAIK Sony use propriatry HW. The R&D development tool - has the same architecture as the target - but has R&D tools bolted onto it. To allow developers to take traces, core dumps, etc Probably has hard-disks, IO ports etc. If developers coded directly onto the target platform - then that throw's portability out the window straightaway. There is no game distributer on the planet that is going to write HW propriatey code - if they can possibily get away with it. That would mean - game like Doom 3 would have to be re-written from scratch for every platform. Erm .. no. Developers will use clever SW engineering techniques like Object Orientated design to reuse code as much as possible ..and only write new code where they absolutely have to. That's why consoles use middleware - like that Renderware I mentioned. So, the game developers don't need worry about the HW. They just access the HW from the API. Different versions of renderware being availble for the different consoles.
