VELOCITY
Tesco fuel came up trumps on a test done by Pistonheads. Is it enough to convert the optimaxers? http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/news/default.asp?storyId=14919
garetheves
I never use Optimax unless im desperate. Its Tesco 99 or Sainsburys SUL all the way for me.
Stonkin
I always use Tesco 99, its better priced and performs better. Optimax also feels ok, but is more expensive. My car seems to drink BP Ultimate far quicker than any of the above fuels
Wez
Optimax is being replaced with V-Power which is also 99ron
Wez
Looking through that quickly they are also testing on NA engines, not turbos running in excess of 14psi.
Mike
Looking through that quickly they are also testing on NA engines, not turbos running in excess of 14psi. I don't think it makes much difference on an N/A....

Muffleman
So we now have two contrasting reports, one from a magazine where they used a turbo engine on a bench and each fuel, plus we now have the pistonheads report. I'll use whatever I'm nearest to
supra sam
My car ran like crap on the tesco stuff, bp ultimate all the way for me even though I live 2 minutes round the corner from a shell garage!
Wez
I think the main difference between the reports is that one was on NA engines and the other on Turbos.
mr lover
my local shell garage has just shut down , but my local tescos has just started selling 99ron
Alex
Don't think anyone has denied it shouldn't make good power... It's got Bio-Ethanol in it. But it's not advanced...and won't clean your engine like the V-Power or Ultimate will.
Dave
it does make a differance in my n/a engine picks up a lot better. and in my local tesco they have 97 ron printed on the pump of super u/l

stupra
My car runs well on tesco 99, but I prefer V power now, the car's alot more responsive. BP ultimate doesn't last as long in my car, an doesn't feel as good as the other two either.
Angie
Regarding the additives. I haven't heard anywhere (other than from people on here) that the Tescos fuel DOESN'T have additives. I know they haven't mentioned it in any of their advertising, but does that mean it doesn't have any? I don't know - maybe it does. All I know is that since about April this year we have tried to use more Tesco fuel and less Optimax (which we always used in the past) after reading about some members here having problems with valve stem oil seals and the blue smoke issues while running OPtimax. They reckoned they had noticed the problem become much less pronounced when they switched away from Optimax. Since making the switch to Tescos fuel ourselves, we rarely see any blue smoke anymore - it was a daily event before! Also, there have been numerous occasions where after filling up with Tescos 99, the car has gone like a rocket! A very noticeable difference that made me think the wastegate actuator hose must have popped off! (it happened on my car this year and caused the car to over boost. Great for the acceleration but NOT for the engine!) I know where I'll be buying my fuel from now on, but hey! I'm only a woman so don't take any notice of me!! supRo
I've posted elsewhere - My blue start up smoke totaly stopped half a year ago when I switched to Ultimate and Tesco 99. Also slightly more power on the Dyno with half a tank ultimate and half Tesco! Also Optimax separates into two liquids within 2 months if not used... I worry about degradation if you leave your car standing a week or two with Optimax - I've had problems leaving my car a week - It ran like shite till I put fresh petrol Edit to say: Having said all that, I will give the Shell V power a try! terribleturner
I trried Tesco's but the car diddn't feel as responsive. Could have been because my pockets had more money from saving on the price but i doubt it Plus Tesco's is rated as up to 99 ron isn't it?? Which means it could be as low as 97/96.
