Matt Harwood
I've just put a Supra in for an MOT, and its failed on headlight alignment and excessive noise. It's an NA with a Nur Spec and only the second cat, so it is very loud, but I've never heard of a car failing for this reason before??? Daston
if it all mechanicly sound ie no exhaust holes then surly they cant do you for it, think of a TVR/noble/lambo/Viper they airnt exacly quiet
LeeT
Strange one that. Ive never heard of that either. Shame you didn't have the baffle to hand
Thorin
It's just MOT testers discretion AFAIK, if he thinks it's too loud he can fail it, no set levels or anything. Take it somewhere else
Dave F
Mine went through its previous one with the baffle out but no de-cat. Did sound very loud when they did the cat tests.
Faye Brother
As per Thorin's response, there's no defined noise limit for exhausts, but the link below explains why the tester has failed the vehicle. http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_710.htm
stupra
I've not heard of that either, I guess it depends on what the blokes like who does the testing. Surely the tester could of tweaked the headlights, thats whats happened with my cars in the past.

Yeah it's a pissy thing to fail it on, like a lot of garages would fail you if you had an indicator bulb gone. My dad would just replace the bulb, it's only a few pence and seconds to do, plus you can pretty much garauntee they'll come back again next year. squiffy
just spoke to my old man and he said they dont fail on noise for an mot, but it can fail sva for it
Wez
Sounds like the tester was being a tool

They did say they would normall have adjusted the headlight aim, but seeing as it failed anyway, they didn't! Doubt I'll be using them again
Gamer
*Note to self* Stay far away from Matt's MOT tester with my car.
Keith C
Get 'em to find another decatted NA and claim that it's any quieter - it does say 'similar vehicle'
Darren-K
you wanna go back and ask him " if it the car was painted in candy stripes would you fail it for being to bright" ?
Pete
The legal noise level is 101db for road use. I know this as my kitcar failed on this twice and was a complete sod to get quiet. Police have been known to test for this, but it's rare.
Thorin
Ah yes, that's for SVA though, no such levels for MOT.
Pete
Ah yes, that's for SVA though, no such levels for MOT. But if it's for SVA, then surely that's for road legal limit? Although I do agree, it's not particularly an MOT test point AFAIK.
blitz supra
As per Thorin's response, there's no defined noise limit for exhausts, but the link below explains why the tester has failed the vehicle. http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_710.htm I think there is an actual dB level the police can nick you for 110dB i think, this can be done in a roadside check if you get pulled into one of those emission check things But the big Motorbikes are really loud so a Supe should cause a problem, and no doubt the tester had it on a ramp inside a garage?? Tel him he's taking crap... if no joy go to another garage Lets hope these new cameras from Aussie don't arrive here, not only will they nick you for speed but also noise ( exhaust/ stereos etc) another way of hitting the motorists pocket
SimonB
There is no legal limit as such for cars, only for bikes. It's down to judgement, as the law says something about being unsociably loud. It would be up to the court to decide if it ever made it that far. There are lots of things that are required for SVA but not legal requirements afterwards, like the switches being rounded with no sharp edges etc etc.
Faye
[sulk] At this rate I might as well just stick the stock exhaust back on and then I'll conform to all the sodding "green" rules of this stupid petty country. [/sulk]
Pete
It makes the SVA a complete farse as you simply reverse everything afterwards.
