RobSheffield
Surely it would be an idea before you start tuning to test the state of the engine? Jesus Rob, and yeah that ^^ Surely normal checks should be carried out before mapping commences?
colsoop
Tough break Robert, i hope you get it sorted soon.
Darren-K
is there no way this can be claimed off insurance ?
Bobbeh
I dont think insurance will pay anything for it. Its mechanical failure, you dont get insurance for that do ya?

Guest Bijal
A: the engine should have been checked prior to mapping it. B: there is a high possibilty that the engine WAS already on its way out before tuning started. But if this was the case then DURING early stages of tuning it could have been easily noticed if correct equipment were being used. C: i doubt very much that if the engine was in GOOD condition and tuning comenced (without any checks), they would have noticed something wrong or not right with the engine and stopped there and then. Paul Whiffin
Hi Rob, Very bad luck with what happened today, I was looking forward to giving it back to you so you can feel the force f your new setup, I feel for you after spending the money on the single conversion. In my opinion the engine was on its way before we starting mapping today. A tell tale sign being the small oil leak which has now become a large oil leak from the camshaft seals trying to pop themselves out of position, the timing belt has oil on it now, so there's a bit of heavy breathing going on. Must have been the beginning of the piston problem. Never seen cam seals pop out on a Supra before, plenty of crank seals but not cam seals. Beforehand there was a bit of blue smoke on start up, soon cleared though. Also the car was given to us with the afr's all over the place, running off the scale lean one minute then the other way then back again, completely inconsistent, I dont know how long the car was driven for like this and under what conditions. The new 02 sensor we fitted got rid of that problem. The engine started smoking after only a few pulls, running WELL safe AFR's and ignition figures/no det, 1.3 bar boost and no signs of anything going wrong, switched it off immediately and got a tow back to base. Took the plugs out and done a quick compression test and no 5 was found to be very low. So now its either engine rebuild or a replacement engine. If you need to talk to me about any of this just give me a ring on my mobile 07774 835062, I'm away on holiday until the 5th September. Seb
Sorry to hear this Robert, hope it gets sorted. Aristo engine has a few minor differences iirc such as sump and power steering pump position, don't know if that will make any difference to fitting Supra 2JZ lump in. Whatever you decide, good luck! Hi Seb, engine is exactly the same, we fitted an Aristo lump into a Supra a few months back, just meant swapping over the sump and a few other bits and bobs that are different, no probs there. Marco
Ouch bad luck! How much would a full rebuild cost?
mr keef
Not meaning to be a dick here but..if i gave my car to a tuner to be mapped...and while they mapped it the engine blew....that means i would be looking for a new engine or rebuild etc out of my own pocket???not having a go at anyone here by the way. Paul Whiffin
Shit, Gutted for you Rob. That worries me as mine is making the same noise that yours was making just after start up...maybe she due too! Not re-build time for you?? What noise was that? Not piston slap was it? Didn't notice any strange noises when it was here.

I never heard the noise myself. Its just got me thinking
Pig
yes... you would have to pay imo. sounds like the engine was on its way before mapping started. sorry to hear this.. dusty is doing good deals on new short blocks;) Sadly for robert i agree with jamie. From what paul is saying they didnt push it untill it popped they just played it the way they should have done. Some of these engines are old and they can go. Its the heart ache of tuning cars. Poor rob knew the risks.... doesnt stop any of us being really gutted for him!
Nic
Bad luck Robert I'm doing even better deals on short blocks if you want details give me a shout.
BURT
hey rob, really sorry to hear this matey, esp that this would have been a real one off car.. whats the mileage on this car bud.... was a compression test done before mapping started? IMO if the engine was a high mileage one, it would have been a good idea to do the various tests before mapping.. and then if sus, mapping should not have been done till the issues were sorted. i dont mean to be pointing any fingers here but sounds like more human error to me. Robert
something around 68k on the engine. stock (except exhaust) until i went single.
JamieP
Sounds to me like you have been tearing about on a poorly setup car.. i read that paul said the afr's was all over the place... running lean and rich when he got it... Who put the base map on? Ive been in the car with paul when he is mapping and he spent a lot of time getting the fueling spot on before letting me use any boost.
