Police now doing roadside eye tests

I read that near Abergavenny the police are now doing roadside eye tests to check how drivers eyesight is. they need to read number plates at 4 different distance.

methinks, testing people on situation awareness, road observancy and rules of the road would be more sensible

I think it's a step in the right direction TBH. I remember the local police doing it round here years ago, they pulled a woman over who when asked to read a number plate, got her glasses out of the glovebox before doing it

lordy, that's amazing, but you do see some of the crazy things they do. funny how you see people driving along, see a police car and then put their seat belt on

I've got 3 pairs of glasses.

One for long distance (I can see the road), one for reading (I can see the instruments) and an in-between pair for driving.

With them I can see the speed traps ahead AND how fast I'm going... :D

How did you manage that??

there were only 3 cars in the carpark of the test centre. so i memorised all 3 reg plates when walking in!

when in examiner walked me into the carpark, he asked me to stop and read the numberplates to him! teehee :innocent:

Reminds me of Space Cowboys :D The eye test was the only bit I was nervous about on my driving test, even though I knew my sight was fine :conf:

good one :D

could do that on this test. drive past wear they are doing the check, on other side of the road. park car, and walk past and memorise them. then go back and drive past :D

i thought about watching that movie last night, funnily enough.

same here, eye test was part that worried me. i do not think it is the most important part, situation awareness is far more important. checking under cars and between them for movement, looking at car in front to see where someone is looking, the obvious stuff, etc etc.

I had a test at the opticians, where they sat me in front of this white cocave box and flashed lights at various points to see your field of view, was quite fun :D

Personally I'd rather see the police do more eye tests and less speed traps - speed differs all the time but someone's eye-sight if dangerously bad will always be a hazard.

Just out of curiosity, what happens if you fail? :conf: Do they drive you away and confiscate your car if it turns out you're dangerously poor-sighted?
