Fixed Penalty Notice, someone most know....

Hi Guys, Im back, by demand of our Police. Now Im really hoping someone can clarify this for me, especially from our resident coppers.

I got pulled tonight for my front number plate, its a small one on a Bomex and I have been caught on a front number plate camera about 2 year ago, not that that matters.

But they told me again that if I get 3 of these (£30 fixed penalty notice) that the DVLA will take my licence plate away, its a private plate. They said once I get 3 tickets for the same offence that when I next come to tax or insure the car my registration wont exist.

Is this true, and what happens to someone with a standard plate ? Do they have their reg removed as well and then have to get a new one assigned ??

How can I get around this, really cant afford to have all the front end sorted just because of my plate. I know its small but it is readable by cameras, this is the main reason they are clamping down he said ??

Im miffed...........

Yes they can definetly confiscate your private plate (and resell it). They usually do it for people the persistantly mis-space thier reg to make the characters appear like other chars.

Yes, if they have persistantly misrepresented the number. The DVLA will issue them with a different reg number.

Fit a proper sized plate.

My brother got stopped because of the small "bike" front plate on his RX7, the ANPR system has trouble reading them apparently.

This sucks guys........... :(

So whats everyone else doing these days with Bomex fronts and the like ?

What about a square plate like an Evo mounted on the side ? Is that still illegal ?

He also said that my rear plate is illegal but he'll let me off that, they have all said that so far, but its full size lettering, square plate with the reg split, like S66 on the top and ASP on the bottom ? Its the standard size that comes on the Supra, is this still illegal ?

It took me 2 years to get stopped for having illegal plates.

I think once this has happened it's best to get the legal ones fitted to avoid any future hassle.

A police officer would be certainly annoyed if you hadn't rectified the problem if you got pulled again, this would also give them an excuse to check your car out more thoroughly!

Not only will they take your plate away but issue you with a dreaded Q plate and prevent you from applying for another private plate for that vehicle.

Could you confirm if a square plate like an Evo has mounted at the side is ok, I cant afford to block anymore air flow through the front and Im hoping this is my next best option, providing its deemed ok by your good self thats in the know ?

This is how my rear plate is, i've never been told its illegal, an i've had the police behind me a few times an not been pulled over. It also passed an MOT with this plate.

Ooo thanks Doug that's the second new thing I've learnt today. It makes sense but it wasn't something that would have occurred to me.

Out of interest, my MOT tester threatened to fail me for my plates. I measured them when I got home and they comply with the section of the current regulations specific to import vehicles. Does anyone know whether the Supra qualifies for that particular clause, it might help Suprash if they do as they are at least a little smaller than standard.

I have as well, but then you get the odd one that claims the rear is illegal as well, where do you stand......?

It passes the MOT, so why do they say it.........

I have had this car 5 years, no problem, and it seems once they start on you, it dont stop........

Just get new normal sized plates made up, its no big deal and wont detract from the looks of your car, illegally small plates look chavy anyhows!!

I will get a normal one made up, what Im asking is can I arrange it in the same format like on the Evo plates, S66 up top with ASP underneath, it will be full size lettering but just like a rear plate stuck on the front, if its legal on the rear it has to be legal on the front surely ?

You can see it here........http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=34504&highlight=sony

You are rather asking for it Ash. That front plate is piss takingly small. Looks good though :)

I wouldn't put a square, offset Evo-style plate on a Supra, it looks shit - although it would make it legal.

What about a stick-on one like mine? They aren't strictly legal either but Cops don't seem to mind them. Or take the front plate off completely

I should think it'd be ok, but then I suppose that'll be down to the policeman/women who pulls you over. You can't win with them if they wanna give you a hard time, what you don't want is the same copper pulling you whenever they see you, just because he/she want's too. I had this a couple of years ago on one of my bikes, its a pain in the arse.

Mate, I dont think I can afford to have a stick on one, if I then get pulled and he says its illegal, bang, private plate gone......

My hands are tied........

So if an Evo plate makes it legal, thats all Im worried about right now........

I can understand giving people notices for number plates where they are strying to spell out something different, beit it with bolts spaced right, letters moved or fancy writting, but mine is standard lettering, spaced correctly, just a little bit smaller. But isnt a AVPN thing the camers that sit in their cars, the ones that get you from behind ???

What about motor bikes plates on the front, do they have them, I know the old bikes used to have them mounted on the front guard, but newer ones I cant recal seeing them......

Im not feeling too happy right now man...... ;)

The square ones are quite leagl as Jake states. If you go down the no plate option, always carry a proper legal correctly sized one in the car so you can always answer "well it fell off occifer".:D

Thats what i usually do although ive got a small plate like Ash's for work as i keep getting pulled by the MOD:D

Ash, where did you get pulled? Basingstoke?
