Patrick_Devlin
I've got problems starting the car. Its happened in the last 3 days... Its like the starter motor is sticking, when I first try turning the key it just clicks, then after a few goes it'll fire up as normal. Is this the starter motor or the battery? and how much is a new starter motor should this one fail? Ta

SkyJawa
Defo battery, thats what mine did - new battery fixed. If its less or just over 1 year then it should be covered under warranty - most are 2 years some are 3............

Check the connectors on the terminals are tight before you chuck your battery away. If it is the battery, get one with a higher CC figure next time. Guest Terry S
The Frost kills them. Get a Battery from Halfrauds, they offer a 4 year free replacement warranty. Just remember to keep the receipt.
Patrick_Devlin
Bah humbug... I guess a battery is better than a starter motor But I'll check the connectors etc... and also check how old the battery is.
matt
I'm sure all batteries come with at least a 2yr warranty. Get a new one if you have the receipt.. I have gone thro' 1 per year with the soop . Mine isn't a daily driver so this is a factor , I'm sure .... I can ,also, recommend Halfords for batteries.....may have had 3 but only paid for the first
Terminator
Check your connections. Four year guarantee batteries are great I have had two replacements at about three years nine months. I had a loan battery while they checked it but got a brand new battery out of it each time. My current MKIV battery is guaranteed for life!!!!! And I still have the receipt. If your car is not in regular use of a float charger is a good idea, just keeping the battery in at top charge all the time.
Patrick_Devlin
The car is in regular use, 40 mile a day commute! I'm not sure its the battery... once it does fire up it does it instantly, the starter motor doesnt turn over at all!
richy2jz-gte
the best place 2 get a battery belive it or not is a vauxhall dealer. they do batterys 2 fit any car there cheap as chips (around £25) and have a 3yr warranty. halfrauds are right robbing ba&@*%ds. Chris Wilson
When it does it put a jump lead set up on from a known good battery, if it makes no diffeence it's almost certainly the starter. I am seeing a good few now, and I keep the necessary repair parst in stock. Can do a while you wait repair or postal next day return service. Usually about 60 quid, plus postage. Terminator
Chris, on average at what age do they start failing.
Chris Wilson
It is more what usage the engine gets, lots os starts and they go sooner, the 300,000 mile MKIV TT I get in is still on the same starter it left Toyota with, as it rarely gets turned off Lot's of short journeys will wear the starter (and often the engine) more than less very long ones. I guess I have had to fix about 5 or 6 so far.
ad500
Ive just had this very thing happen. Few clicks initially then after a while it would fire up. Battery died without warning so i replaced it with a new one, however it did continue to start badly even with the new battery. If after changing the battery you have the same thing, check the lead to the starter motor. Leon found this to be fractionally loose, and after tightening, all back to normal. My only ever cheap fix, lol

My only ever cheap fix, lol It will go again soon. By tightening the battery lead you fractionally rotate a burnt contact within, offering a tiny fresh region of copper to the solenoid contactor disc, this soon burns away again! Ok Chris, so ill be looking at a new starter motor soon then, lol. Will this just go without warning or will it slowly get worse?
Patrick_Devlin
Its still doing this. Havent checked anything yet, but noticed that its getting fractionally worse Oh well, its only money!
Chris Wilson
My overhaul is a LOT less than a new unit and should give many more years trouble free operation, so it's not TOO bad It will probably give a bit of warning, but if it stops starting first turn it needs doing straight away. Patrick_Devlin
So is it worth me driving the 300 mile round trip to CW's? I thought I'd ring Toyota to see if they could help on this dilema! They could... New starter motor £260+VAT Fitting £190+VAT 3 hours labour at £63 f***ing an hour So its off to see Chris
