Steve Cargill
I know I've got DOT 5 fluid in my system and it now needs topping up. I assume that it can be any DOT 5 fluid, not just the same type as is already in there.
matt
Sure its not 5.1? 5 is silicon based

Terminator
Steve the only safe option may be a complete flush to change the lot.
Guest Terry S
TBH Steve depending how long it's been in there it's probably worth changing and sticking Motul 600 in. It's pretty cheap and very good.

Jspec Germany
How is a "complete flush" accomplished and can I do it myself?
Pete
I wouldn't, horrible stuff. Not worth messing with your life if you can't get pressure back up.
Jspec Germany
Crap. This presents a dilemna. I've got the supe up on jack stands while my wheels are away for a refurb + new tire fitting and am taking on some much needed projects. One is swapping my U.S. spec front brakes on. This will mean some brake fluid loss. I don't know what is in the system now so I can't very well just top it off now can I. I'd like to empty the system completely and fill it with 5.1. The only stuff I've been able to find here in NW Germany is Bendix 5.1 but it's god-aweful expensive stuff. Recommendations? I will continue to look for another brand. I'm also in the market for some braided lines to be purchased and shipped ASAP. Any takers? Thanks.

chilli
Unless you specifically asked for silicone based fluid (which would require a complete flush and refill) i would assume it was regular fluid and put 5.1 in there - I guess if you can't be 100% sure it hasn't got silicone fluid in there then thats a real pain. I wouldn't be suprised if there is a way to tell though, maybe worth a google search or something. Maybe with a small sample of the fluid from the master cylinder you can test it somehow... toyotasuprauk
This is one job I dont want to do personally. I'm going to take it to a garage and get them to change it. If they use any old 5.1 and there was something else in there before what will happen? Also why is this Motul 600 better than whatever you get at motorfactors etc? Terminator
If you block off the lines and ensure that the reservoir never drops below minimum when you do a calliper swap, you should not have a problem. The easiest way is using a fluid of a different colour it is then obvious when the old stuff is all out. You must keep everything clean when working on brakes. A few cans of brake cleaner come in handy. I have changed or refurbed more callipers than I care to remember over the years and never had a problem. From memory 1.5L will do a complete flush, so buy 2L and bleed 1/2L out of each calliper and the system will only contain new fluid. But if you are in any doubt, pay someone to do it. Terminator
Also why is this Motul 600 better than whatever you get at motorfactors etc? I am sure Chris Wilson would give a better explanation - It is a racing fluid, higher boiling point and less hydroscopic. As sort of ditch water - best bitter comparison really. toyotasuprauk
Is it overkill for just a street car? It will never go on a track.
chilli
If you have the car all jacked up and accesssable, flushing the fluid or bleeding the brakes after a caliper change is really a piece of p1ss TBH.
