kamikaze
From looking at some of the cap badges as avatars on here i imagine we have some military guys on here and was just wondering if anybody has some advice for someone thinking of joining the services Im 23 (nearly 24!) so i need to get on with my life now,im currently employed as a Security Officer with 9 GCSEs (A*-C) I applied to the Royal Military Police last year was accepted and was given a date to join my unit (Jan 2006) but due to unforeseen circumstances i was unable to join. However,im thinking of joining up again But what to?Anything concidered (I was an Infantryman in the weekend warriors for 3 years) Cheers guys Adam
ChrisSZ
TBH mate it's a "how long is a piece of string" question. Are you looking long-term (ie skills/trade you can use when you leave the Services)? Or "fun" stuff? What are you currently good at? What would you like to do? Which of the services have you thought of joining? If you crave physical/mental challenge then you gotta go for the Royal Marines or Paras. Your best bet woul really be to go to the local Recruitment Office and chat to them there (bearing in mind they are usually bisaed and will try to push you towards their Regiment!). I would just say though that the infantry (grunts or gravel-bellys) is not anywhere near as good as it used to be :( Most deployments now are either with the UN as an international peackeeper or stuck somewhere sandy propping up the septics!! The chances of a decent 1-1 fight nowadays is pretty remote
Andy-No-Knee
RMP - Fek they are cnuts, worse than normal coppers, trying to stich up squadies all over the place. Only problem is they are so dumb it usually falls through! It all depends on what YOU like doing. You mentioned being in the Infantry in the TA, well that is an option for you as a reg, by joining the same cap badge. Or you could look long term and see what trade gives you something to use when you leave, as there isnt much call for morter men and firing a GPMG in civi street (unless you want to become a PMC but the bottom has fallen out of that market). So, that sort of thing is REME, RE, and Signals. If you just want to drive (and it doesnt take the sharpest knife in the drawer to do) join the RLC, but you can get all of your licences (and more) with the other Regt's mentioned above. If you want to travel and see everywhere, then go either Infantry or RA. There is also Cav, if you like playing with HEAVEY METAL and Army Air Corps if you want to live in hotels, and be a fuel jockey for a helo. Hope it helps and if you have anymore questions PM me and I will try to answer. Or log onto ...... http://www.arrse.co.uk for the Army Rumour Website and ask there. The chances of a decent 1-1 fight nowadays is pretty remote When i applied to RMP they kept pushing me to join the Engineers due to my GCSE grades. I way thinking of joining the Police later on so RMP seemed a good option,However during my TA days i just crave the running around, shooting and stuff.I just couldnt be stuck in a workshop all day as a techy Thought about Marines then specialising in provost/police side when ive had enough of GD. Max Headroom
I loved my time in the Forces, if I was to join again it would be as an officer, the benefits are far greater when you leave!

Ditto!!!!! I was in a rush to join, so I went straight in from school at 16, instead of etting some 'A's and a degree and being a 'Rupert'. Looking back at the fun I had becoming an officer would have been better. Saying that, my personality lends itself to my currant rank quite well....... SupraAyf
Adam, Infantry and affiliated trades are great when you're young, but should you wish to use the military as a stepping stone to bigger and better things then a trade is always best under the old proverbial belt. Please PM me as there are a few interesting points in your thread that I would like to discuss with you. (I do have fairly credible credentials to advise you on this matter). Very best regards, Andrew However,im thinking of joining up again Adam

Tom S
money isn't everything or so they say. Go technical Trades. They will allow further advancement and money. Don't let any one put you off RMP, I'm ex RAF police QPD, loved it.
kamikaze
Sound advice there, a trade will see you in good stead for when you leave. Max Headroom
Sorry, just another thought, whilst in the Forces I travelled to every continent apart from Australia. The thought that comes to me is standing on a beach on the Falklands, cooking breakfast surrounded by 2000 penguins. It put some perspective on your life. Also I was able to indulge in any sport that I wished to try and the best was when I played golf against an Air Commodore and whooped his ass

Andy-No-Knee
OMI?? Well you will be doing everything from updating Tac Map boards in a Brigade/Div HQ to briefing the head sheds on current/new int. You mentioned you liked the activity, well MI isnt the most active branch of the services. And as you also said you wanted to be a copper on leaving, well any service puts you in good stead there. As you have the 'future' in hand as it were I would go for something you know you would enjoy now.....

Kittyclaws
Don't think that joining the RMP (Monkeys) will help you get into the police. Only way you can be sure of getting in at the moment is if you are Gay with only one arm etc (no offense to any gay peeps) I spent 6 years in the Royal Navy, 2 yrs of which was in Northern Ireland, working along side the RUC etc, but the police did'nt give a toss about that.
