Drugs in sport

Given that there has been yet another high profile athlete failing a test (Marion Jones as reported in today's Independant) isn't it time we admitted defeat and allowed everyone to take any performance enhancing drug thus making it a true level playing field.

Or should we continue the fight against drugs and hope that the testing becomes enough of a deterent for everyone to try to win "clean".

But all the athletes will be dead from cancer and the like. And seeing as they'll be infertile before they die they won't have any kids so their superior atheletic type genes won't get passed down so we'll end up having to rely more upon drugs....
But if their superior athletic ability was drug induced their genes won't have been enhanced anyway.

Why's that then? It's not an impossibility, it's just expensive. If they want to seriously beat the drug stigma, it's the only way to be 100% sure that all athletes are clean.

As with most things, if you make a rule, someone will try there best to get around the rule. You just have to be pro-active in trying to prevent it.

I can see a new game, the 100m shoot up!! the rules are simple you start at the beggining of the 100m and you have to sprint to the other side and be able to shoot up at the same time, first accross the line wins, you get disqualified if its not done cleanly.

On a serious note I think that anyone that takes performance enhancing drugs to make them better in sport no matter what it is should be handed a life ban!!

However the screening that athletes go through is a farce, look at the Scottish slalum skier that got bronze and then was banned asfter testing positive for a performance enhancing drug and it was found that it came from a Vicks nasal decongestant that had a banned substance in it, but the sporting commision was advised that he was taking it and was legal in the UK but the EU rules do not allow an additive that is present in the UK stuff

Same thing for F1 - I say abandon all rules and let the manufacturers make the fastest car they can. Let's see who can really make the fastest GP car regardless of silly tyre/engine size/aero rules.

yes we should, else most money will win, not hard work

Sorry, but I think the opposite would be the case.

At the moment, money is what develops steroids that get around testing. Just because someone does not test positive, does NOT mean they are actually clean. In a lot of cases it just means they have something currently undetectable.

No rules on drugs = a truely level playing field. Drug taking among sportsmen/women is much more widespread than most want to believe.

I agree with CJ let them take the drugs, most of them are on some kind of supplements that sail close to the wind in terms of legality, the chemists are prodcuing new products all the time some remain legal some become illegal.

If they want to damage their long term health let them crack on with it.

The only draw back to the above is the impressional youth who watch an athlete on TV knowing he / she takes drugs and think that is the way to do things.

Drugs are Baaad...m'kay

The only way to beat it is to test everyone, once a fortnight. So the IOC and all the Athletics Associations should be pumping money into drug detection systems, to speed the process up.

But they dont know what they are testing for? And strangely can never find the athletes in the off season to test them  Wonder wgy that is? ;)

This is a bit of a sore subject for me as I used to compete in 100 meters professionaly for 3 years.

I never took the juice but had a good friend of mine who competed against me and took plenty of the stuff. My trainer was always telling me he was on it but I did not really beleive it.

In my 100 Meter career I did not loose once in 3 years due to my trainer being such a hard ass and making me slug it out on the track by my own for hours on end while the rest of the guys were dossing about. I was the only person to obtain sponsorship by Nike and the plan was to go to the olympics (the last ones)

long story short.. My so called friend who was on the juice has been in prison for 5 years serving a life scentence for killing someone outside a nighclub. Towards the end of his athletic career he was injecting silly ammounts of the stuff and became quite unstable.

Basically he got himself in to a fight and ended up dismantling the local thug in about 1 minute.. Not happy with the fight and the way the guy had gone down while walking away he decided to run back and give the guy a dropkick to the head.

The guy went home after he came to and his brain had apparently suffered internal bleeding which turned in to a clot and died in his sleep. The CCTV footage was all the judge needed to send him down.

ALL OF THIS WAS DUE TO THE STEROIDS AND THE WAY IT CHANGED HIM...

Maybe in running, or weight lifting, but I've never heard of sports/drugs scandals in Discus throwing...
