AEM AFR Gauge Problem

......I Think.

The gauge when you turn on the car to the on position does it's little preset routine then goes straight to around 14.8. I then turn the car over and it usually bounces around 14.7 to 15.1. I add a little throttle an it still bounces around in the same bracket reading. I've taken the sensor out and given it a quick clean but it was brand new when it went in.

Does this sound like there's something wrong with it to anyone??

Are you saying that the reading is 14.7 to 15.1 through cranking, or at idle, and from warm or cold?

From Cold, at idle I'd expect a reading of around 11 or lower.

When warm, it will fluctuate between roughly 14.4 to 15.5 as the stock ECU tries to keep it as close to 14.7 as possible.

I'm not really sure what it would read whilst cranking due to the amount of current the starter motor pulls, this may 'upset' the guage. Theoretically, I'd expect it should be richer, (lower numbers), while the engine is cranking.

At idle from Hot AND cold.

The gauge has never read lower than 14.7 ever.

I used a little lemon juice to clean the sensor.

Going to put a proper wideband on the car next week to double check the readings. Just was wondering if it's possible a wire had come loose or something.

Mine is down in the 11s when its cold and comes back up to 14+ when hot and obviously goes all over the place when driving, particularly when on part throttle and coming off throttle. It will go off the scale with a --- as well.

Who fitted the guage and sensor for you?

You should be able to test the gauge calibration by turning the ign on with the sensor unplugged, what reading does it display.

I have the non-gauge version and to calibrate the output signal you unplug the sensor, switch on the ign and it should read 4v on the 0-5v output, the gauge should also have the same 0-5v output for ECU hook up.

I'll have to have a play on Monday when i get back to the car. Cheers Wez.

proper wideband?

Why, isn't the AEM proper?

...or are talking about an AFR display of the stock sensor signal?

If that's the case then your readings are normal. Narrowaband sensors don't get beyond 13.5 and 15.5:1 even when new. Old ones hover around 14.5 and 15:1.

Hence the term 'narrowband', lol...;)
