Pig
I think i need to replace my coil packs to try to stop the really lumpy idle. Not sure if its that or just that the idle needs to be changed on my ECU. How much do coil packs go for and does anyone have any for sale?
Robert
have you checked the coil pack connecters mate?
Pig
i have check they are all connected if thats what you mean??
Robert
i mean if the little white piece is still inside them, as when you remove them to change the plugs they can get damaged
Pig
Ill have a check, would that cause a very lumpy idle if on was fucked!
Robert
yeah if the white piece is missing then the coil wires would fit onto the coil packs correctly.
LeeT
also the metal contacts themselves become loose over time and can be tightened back up again very easily. There is a good thread on this by Ianc in the frequently asked questions section. Its worth checking all these first as coil packs aint cheap
Pig
Just looked, will do that and see if it helps. Thanks for the great guide IAN C
Nic
What do you mean when you say lumpy? Is it misfiring or are the revs going up and down at idle. I've found a dodgy coil connector will usually cause misfiring under load rather than at idle. If the revs are going up and down then it is probably the idle control valve, removing and cleaning it should sort out the problem. If you do need new coil packs I can supply for £52 each including postage.
RedM
I've had all my coil pack gubbins replaced and the idle control valve cleaned and I still idle in a lumpy stylee. IIRC Chris Wilson once mentioned that sometimes it just is lumpy and you can't do much about it. Could a knackered O2 sensor also be the cause? Robbie
If you decide you need a set Ive still got my old ones for sale. I replaced mine and it made no difference so they should be fine.

Pig
Ok, thanks for all the responces guys. Will replace them at rebuild time as the casing is cracked etc. For now it seems the idle problem is that idling is set too low. Whats causing is the level set too low on the EMU. I have a feeling its all gone tits up at a date AFTER the mapping as it was fine on the day. Will try to put my computer on it and see where i go from there! Not very technically minded so could be fun :D
Ian C
OK, number one, a gammy coil pack shows up when on boost, not at idle. The air resistance in the cylinder is at its lowest on idle, any coil pack should spark through that. Two, I bet that crack is in one corner of the housing, same place on every one of them They all pretty much go like that but it doesn't mean it's broken. Three, you can't set an idle on the EMU The stock ECU decides where the idle is. A dodgy idle can be caused by a lot of things, but it's not caused by coil packs or the EMU Drop a thread in tech describing the symptoms and we can see what's what before you spend £400 or so on the wrong bits. -Ian
