Vaughany
I am now planning the next stage of my mods. My supe has the following perfomance mods. Nurspec R exhaust system, HKS Induction kit, 2nd Cat removed, CW SMIC, Samco hoses for Intercooler and Coolant. Trust Racing plugs and a trl fuel cut defender for safety. The car runs at about 1.05 bar, I am now looking to remove the 1st cat and fit a restrictor ring to raise and hold the boost at 1.2 bar. My question is do I need to fit an electronic Boost Controller and if so what advantages does this give me. For example I am aware that a Boost Controller will allow me to set 4 levels of boost depending on which controller I purchase starting with say stock boost rising to 1.2 bar. What other advantages does it offer, if I am not planning to change the turbos etc yet, are electronic boost controllers required. It seems with a J-Spec you can achieve 1.2 bar of boost just by removing the cats so a boost controller is not required. Is this the case or does the boost controller offer other advantages such as holding the boost throughout the gear change etc which I believe would allow fastest acceleration etc throughout the gear change. Thanks for any help as I still trying to get to grips with the ideal way to achieve maximum performance.
Nick
Personally I wouldn't bother, just fit the restrictor ring and leave it at 1.2bar. I had an AVCR and it was more trouble than it was worth, the feature list is very impressive but the bottom line is the car runs better without it. Depends if you like to play around.... Chris Wilson
IMO more than 1.2 bar is unsafe, so why fit any sort of controller that can only RAISE the boost? Just fully de cat and use a restrictor if boost goes over 1.2. It's very rare for a J-Spec to not go to around 1.2 with both cats out and no restrictor ring, but it does a simple blled valve works fine. I'd love to sell you a 300 plus quid electronic controller, but i am obliged to say I think they are unecessary myself.
Stu
I am pretty much the same position as you mate..Having last cat removed on wednesday and new fuel pump and fcd fitted...I am also just going for restrictor ring at the moment as I have been told that 1.2 bar is plenty for the road and a safe level to stay at.Also funds are running low and decent Boost controllers aren't cheap!!Just hope the gains are as noticable as when I had the second cat removed..let me know how you get on.. Stu
Roughly what sort of BHP will I be running after I have last cat removed?Other mods are HKS BOV,HKS Induction,Uprated fuel pump,Colder plugs,Nur spec exhaust,FCD.
Nick
How come you're changing the fuel pump Stu?
Stu
Was advised to change it mate..
Nick
I've been running 1.2bar for the past 3.5years and mines been fine so far....
Stu
 To be honest I couldn't argue the pros and cons of upgrading but several people have suggested doing it..Anyone else got an opinion on this?
Jake
Originally posted by Stu Just hope the gains are as noticable as when I had the second cat removed Oh they will be mate. Going from one cat to no cats makes a BIG difference, more than going from two to one cats. Did for me anyway.
Stu
Looking forward to Wednesday even more now! What about fuel pump will that make a noticable difference?
Jake
Originally posted by Stu fuel pump will that make a noticable difference? Nope, unless you're having a problem with it running lean or cuttng out because it can't supply the fuel fast enough. You won't get any improvement in performance from a fuel pump upgrade, just less problems from the other performance mods. It's like insurance, IYSWIM
Andrew
It's not an exact sience,as all supras are different, but you will run about 1.3 bar. I started to hit 1.4 bar, that's when I asked Chris for a restrictor ring, and said I wanted to run 1.2 bar. The restrictor was dead on the money at 1.2 bar I was tempted to go the electronic boost controller route, but decided the temptation to whack the boost up was too great a risk

Stu
Cheers Jake...thats next on the list Nick the FMIC...what sort of money are they fitted?
Nick
I think I read somewhere that Miami Rice are doing good deals on Intercoolers at the moment. They vary in price quite a lot depending on make and who you get to fit it. Mine was done quite a while ago along with a load of other stuff so I can't help there....Could be worth looking at buying from the US with the current exchange rate, MVP are good... Stu
Also won't I have to remove active front spoiler or have it set on some kind of bracket so that its permanently down as I was told it gets in the way?????
Matt Harwood
Personally, I'd get it on a rolling road, (Thor maybe?), and get the fuelling checked. My old auto used to det at 1.25, (which you could easily achive on a cold day), I had the pump and a FSE fitted, and it cured the problem up to 1.3. IMO, if you can afford it, and/or have any future upgrade plans, get the pump done... It may stop nasty holes appearing in some of your pistons
Vaughany
Cheers for the advice on the Boost Controllers, for now i will foget it and just go with the all the cats out and a restrictor ring. Reference the FMIC, I have just bought a CW SMIC, These are an upgraded SMIC and at only £534 inc delivery is an absolute bargain. On talking to Chris, he advised me that this unit is an excellent piece of kit and together with water injection is far better than any FMIC. You also dont have the problems with blocking cold air to the radiator and loosing the active spoiler. I have had mine fitted and am very impressed
Dragonball
Well heres the difference with and without a boost controller fitted http://www.mpaconsultancy.co.uk/miamirice/images/HP%20&%20Torque.jpg The blue line with SBC-ID working You can see the difference in the the entry level of the increased boost and torque So here you have real time rolling road actual [erformance proof of the benefits - You will also be able to see the Blitz's attempts and reducing the boost where I had set the warning to 1.3 BAR You also have the ability to bring on the turbos quicker using the 'gain' facility
Vaughany
Paul, you are obviously in favour of the units, so does a boost controller allow the turbos to work more effectively creating more and holding the boost throughout the gear change. For example, if my supe was running 1.2 bar without a boost controller it may create 200hp in 3rd gear (auto) where a boost controller would produce more hp at the same revs or the same hp at lower revs as a direct comparison, i.e in third gear aswell. (These figures were just examples just so I could understand the benefits) Cheers
Stu
Matt I had budgeted for the fuel pump so will get it done for sure...after all its certainly not going to hurt..
Nick
You're right, the FMIC does restrict airflow to the radiator and unless you've got an aftermarket front bumper with a large aperature then you're not going to make the most of it. One of CW's radiators would help but I think a SMIC and Water Injeciton would make a very good compromise. I'm still not a fan of boost controllers. I bought an FMIC with the view to fitting larger turbos but at the time I didn't realise it would take so long to find a suitable turbo kit and ECU
Stu
Mmmm heard mixed reviews on water injection and after speaking to a few people today really don't know wether or not to get boost controller...Sometimes I wish I had trained to be mechanic rather than poor old plasterer!!!lol..Seems to be so many mixed opinions on the benefits of one on a J spec..Would it only benefit me if I was to carry on modifying my car?If I was to stop after I had last cat out on Wednesday would the restrictor ring be the sensible way to go?
