Matt H
So I know that a shakey steering wheel means that the tracking needs doing, but ive just had my aftermarket steering wheel / boss fitted, and on the motorway it shakes pretty bad. What do you reckon? simply tracking or something to do with the steering wheel cos it wasnt that bad before?
boombastictiger
check you have alighned it properly and that it is the correct kit for your motor and all screwed in properly
Mike M
I thought a shakey steering wheel was the sign that one or both the front wheels were out of balance. Tracking would mean the car is constantly wandering to the left or right.

TLicense
Balance / Tracking. Arent they the same thing? Most definitely not. Very simply put.... The wheels need to be balanced which is the addition of weights to ensure that the wheel is not eccentrically loaded. It's what they do when they change your tyres. If the wheels are out of balance then you'll get a vibration from that wheel. If it's on the front you'll feel it through the steering wheel. This sounds like what is wrong with your car. Tracking or alignment is what direction the wheel is pointing. This can be nose, or "toe" in or toe out. Also they don't have to be the same side to side. (ie they can both be pointing to the left or right, which usually happens after curbing a wheel, and ends up with the car pulling to the left or right)
MarkTheBoy
I get a light vibration when cruising along which increases slightly under breaking, I put it down to the wheels needing balancing. If that fails then i'll have the brakes looked at, not much else it could be.

colsoop
Does it do it at a set speed if so it is most likely a wheel balance issue, i have this at the moment at 70 mph if you accelerate up to say 80 (on a private road of copurse) the shake disappears.
