JZA70 Clutch units

Hi I'm a newbie to the forum, first post, be gentle!

I'm just wondering if anyone could give me any advice on my clutch, it's generally really heavy, makes a slight squeeky sound for the first five minutes whilst the engine's cold then that goes away. I think the unit's on the way out because it's real difficult to get into 1st and 2nd.

Is there anywhere where I can get a decent clutch replacement?

I've been quoted by my local Toyota dealership in Poole for £435 ex VAT, ex labour at £50/hour. Also they couldn't even tell me how long it'd take to fit!

I've now got off the net the full technical manuals for all the Mk4's and we've got full access to a garage and could do a clutch change myself, but I've not found anywhere decent to buy one online or anywhere. Met someone last week who had one fitted for less than £400 inc labour. I'd be quite willing to travel anywhere within 150ish miles of the south coast.

Also can anyone tell me if they've done a ABS conversion on one of these? Racelogic seem to do a system but it's quite pricey. I'm asking this because even though I'm riding 265/35/18 at the rear, 225/40/18 at the front, I've not got enough traction and already flatspotted a pair of fronts when someone pulled out in front of me on a 60mph road. Joy.

Cheers

Simon

I think Matt H had a look at fitting RLTC to a non abs sup and said it was a nightmare !!!!!!!, have a look in the traders section and phone for a few prices , a clutch change is not a job id want to do without a ramp so bear that in mind im in brighton if you get stuck !!!

Thanks Dude,

Yep we've got full access to two ramps, we've done a clutch change on a M3 BMW but that's about it for RWD cars.

I'm not so much after traction control because I'm getting a good feel for when it's going to go (it's only surprised me once in 10 months now) but more the ABS because of the cost of tires!

Any recommendations on brands of clutches or what it's going to cost me? Somone I met last week had one done on the same model for £380, but stupidly I forgot to ask for the details off him.

If you want someone to do the fitting, then I'd recommend Triton motor services, who are on the industrial estate by the airport. They are a jap specialist, and very good.

As for the clutch, you could try getting an upated one from the States from someone like MVP or from one of the dealers on here like Envy. It's a bit of a minefield as there's loads of different types. I think you should be able to get a RPS one or something for around £300 (maybe less from the States).

Talked to Triton regarding fittings, but they didn't say what sort of unit they would fit, they quoted around £400 again, inc labour but ex vat.

I'll check out Envy as well, but as I'm working shifts and working 108 hours in the next nine days, I haven't got the time!
