anthonyj
I just got some replacement boot struts from my mk4 GZ aero and thought whilst it was sunny that I'd whip the old ones out and stick the new ones in. Hmmm, do you actually have to remove all of the trim to get to the bolts on the "car end" of the struts? Does anyone have any hints and tips on how to do it or know of any links to somewhere that details how to remove the back trim (I've tried some searches but not turned anything up)? I'm very excited about the possibility of not having to hold my boot lid up every time I go to Tescos !!!
cashpoint
Only suggestion i've got is don't do it alone. Did the struts on my old car while at Uni and broke the rear screen when the support i was using slipped and the hatch came crashing down. Just glad didn't have my hands in the seal. anthonyj
Blimey - sounds nasty!!! I think I shall invest in a second umbrella to prop it up from both sides!! Did you have any trouble getting the trim off? I'm worried I'm going to break some little bit of plastic somewhere!
Geezabloke
I did mine a few weeks back on my own and yes to do it properly you do have to remove most of the rear trim on both sides of the car..........however i found with the front sections removed and the rest all sitting loose i did manage to "carefully bend and hold the rear sections down whilst i Grazed my knuckles, swore and eventually managed to get the nuts off......... Is bit of a pig but can be done on your own.......just be careful cos the boot weighs a ton and its easy to drop the nuts as you undo them. Good luck mate. anthonyj
Good point about the nuts - I certainly don't want them rattling about in the wing!!!
