The fun police are thinking again....

A major review of speed limits on A and B roads is to take place.

Traffic authorities in England, Scotland and Wales are being asked to conduct reviews which could see 60mph limits coming down on many rural roads.

And...

Our new guidance encourages lowering speed limits where the evidence warrants it but equally traffic authorities should consider increasing limits if it can be done safely

What's betting it's all downs and not too many ups....

It's already happened here in the last few months. All roads that were 60 are now 40. The 70 ones are 60 with dual lanes reduced to single all over the place. There's a strong Police presence at the moment too. :(

Makes for a much duller safer drive to/from work.

One good thing though is that they've put up those LED signs that light up and tell you what speed you should be doing. I think these are much safer (avoiding brake stamping) and still effective to slow you down.

They also record the speed of vehicles, so you could be seeing speed cameras there soon if the average speed recorded justifys them :(

Shame they cant find anything better to do!

But if they bring out the new Road tax scheme where the fit a GPS transmiter to every car so they can moniter how many miles you are doing each year, they can also tell how fast you are driving 100% of the time!!

Food for thought...........

Now i didnt no that. Theres one near me that only goes upto 45mph.

I do think speed limits near schools at school start/finish times should be lowered but speed limits in gen should be upped motorways to 100 me thinks fast lane only.

By the way have you heard about the thing they are on about doing on the motorways putting your reg plate up on signs to shame you if your speeding etc??

I simply find that upping car tax has nothing to do with building better roads but turning this nation into a elective totalitarian state, where nothing is allowed unless passed by the state. And the environmental lobby is a load of tosh being used by the "government" to squeeze more money out of us.

I don't know if the very large ones that flash up a warning record the speeds, but the very small ones that just display the figure do. They printed in the local paper the average and top speed recorded on a stretch of the Stourbridge ring road.

If you drop the speed limit you drop driving skills and awareness to the minimum acceptable limit.

You will spend more time looking at your Roadangel or similar, than looking at the fookin road.

This morning I followed a police camera van up the M23. Everyone backed up behind it, scared to overtake at even 71mph. Not only that, the bugger (yes officer) was sat in the middle lane. The shit he was causing behind him was unbelievable.

I don't advocate unlimited speeds but.. 80+ on a motorway (other than the M25 today) is probably a realistic speed limit, but some of the new (in sussex) country road speed limits of 40 just do not make sense.

An interesting observation though. Is it true that the minimum speed limit applied to a road in one direction automatically applies to the other. I am thinking of a stretch of road in Sussex that opens from a single lane to two lane at 40mph separated by raised curbs from a single lane in the other direction at 40mph.

The joke is that shortly after the two lane returns to single the limit increases to National.

Is there anyone who can answer the riddle of how limits are applied?
