SupraStar 3000
Just watched HOSTEL on dvd and,... well,..... I can't sleep Thats one fooked up film! Now, I'm a BIG horror fan and have seen most of the "classic" video nasties most of which disappoint, BUT in my opinion HOSTEL is in another league The ankle scene is really nasty but the bit that gets me is when the american talks in another language without subtitles and you thing that mabe he can negotiate his release .... Nope! He doesn't! "get the gimp" That was really well directed. Good film although I would class it as very unpleasant to watch

michael
just saw this on a advert...whats it about ?? While backpacking through Europe, college students Paxton (Jay Hernandez) and Josh (Derek Richardson) seek the ultimate vacation through sex, drugs and unforgettable experiences. When a friendly stranger informs the two of a hostel in Bratislava that offers the most beautiful and promiscuous women in all of Europe, Paxton and Derek trek with their new Icelandic friend Oli (Eythor Gudjonsson) to find the hostel that sounds too good to be true. When arriving to Bratislava, the trio found that the hostel was everything and more of what they expected. The events that follow are sure to deliver the unforgettable vacation that the two were looking for. Mystery, suspense and fear direct this film to its bloody ending. http://www.parool.nl/film/2006/recensies/beeld/030106-hostel-410.jpg Apparently they are working on Hostel 2.... Homer
I found it a little tame and wanting more blood and gore (thanks to the internet I'm probably immune to shock stuff by now!). The directors could have made it so much more gruesome but felt they'd toned it down a lot. There's an editors edition due for release soon which should show the real stuff
SupraStar 3000
but for me gore isn't the making of a gruesome/scary film. Hostels location, story and pure lack of respect for human life really disturbed me (In a simular way to clockwork orange). Look at Brain Bead. Although funny its filled with blood and guts but its not a disturbing film. For me The Blair Witch project is scary yet has no gore at all. michael
But Hostel relies on the 'shock gore' factor in the short moments it bothers to try and scare people, there is no mystery, there is no spooky premise to make the viewer scare themselves with their own thoughts about what could happen. It's basic in your face porn with an hour of plodding nonsense followed by cliché after horror cliché wrapped around a potentially fantastic theme. Charlotte
I've heard it isn't that great, but then I heard 'Saw' was excellent and I thought that was pretty lame. If it's enough to scare my little Ed it must be quite bad.

Harps
I didn't think much of it to be honest. Saw it in the cinema when it came out. Very dull at the start, despite the boobs, the torture stuff is fine if you like that kind of thing, but the final 30 mins or so I thought was terrible. Won't spoil it by saying why, but it was laughable.
Mike
Come on... I thought the characters were like frat boys from 'Porkey's'... by the time they were getting killed I wanted to do them myself...! and the eye thing at the end..?! do me a favour.. I thought it was one of the best horror movie ideas I'd heard for ages, but I thought the ad campaign was scarier than the film... The best bit was the yank in the 'locker room'... for me, Roth (director) should have dwelled on the details a bit more -as his pal Tarantino would have, I'm betting he penned that scene... Check out 'Wolf Creek', in my opinion the best of the current crop of new horrors...
