DJs, What decks to buy?

I know there are a few out there in supra land. Im getting the DJing bug again after a few years away from it all (mainly due to car!)

What decks do people recommend aside from the 1210s?

Ive been looking into Vestax decks but just wondered if there is anyone with any first hand experience of them (any model)

Used to have Technics, but im all up for a change if the other brand cuts the mustard as well as they are claimed to.

Any advice?

Cheers Charlotte, that now makes it 3 - 0 to the Technics. You old skool ravers you ;)

This is gonna strictly be for bedroom use, my shot at a DJ carreer is well behind me now. Although may someday ask Matt Harwood to wire them into the sup! Hope he aint reading this :innocent:

So on the Vestax front are we saying this more a sound performance tool as opposed to mixing tool? Just going by Bondangos comment as having one in the studio.

I started in 87 with a set of clouds, and if anyone remembers them - 2 beltdrive decks and mixer all built into a coffin lol

if its only to mess around in the bedroom, any direct drive decks will do to be quite honest, like most people i know, when you do back to playin on the ones and two's you get a buzz playing your old tunes no matter what your playing them on.

If your after bragging rites - go fot he 1210's, if your looking something reliable to use in the bedroom, just go for a set of Copies like the Gemini TT03 Turntable for about £280 a pair. Remember its not the decks the make a DJ - its the tunes :-))

I have some numark TTX's

Better torque, more stable than the 1210 loads of people say a better deck

But.

If you wanting to eventually play out, technics are the industry standard so going from a numark deck with more power/features/looks/feel playing on a 1210 could be difficult.

1210's are great.

I had a deck many years ago, not for DJ'ing but for normal playing and transferring from vinyl to CD, which they excel at with a decent cartridge. I had an Osawa cartridge (MM) and got no rumble from the turntable.

I haven't found anything so far which has beat it, stick with them :)

none.

even the likes of Paul van Dyk use a "laptop and Abbleton live 5" now ,

honestly,,this is the way to go - even the old school dj`s that are mint with decks are moving over to this set up.

its the future.

My housemate used to have the 1210s Mk2 and they were spot on. I could see them lasting years.

When I moved out of there I got some Vestax PDX-2000s and they are just as good as the Technics and have more features (reverse, adjustable start/stop speed, ultra-pitch) but they dont feel as well made. I also think they look a bit toy like but that is beside the point.

As has already been mentioned, if you are ever going to play out in clubs then you are going to find 1210s...

agree with this as i've incorporated Ab live into performances, as well as protools, ive used all the mp3-dj based software packages, but in all seriousness - you cant beat a good stint on a set of decks with a load of classic ital piano tunes and an appreciative crowd - beit a club or a few mates in the house :D

this is true, but i think this can be had from a lappie and abbleton,

i use special hardware controllers for this,.

its completely diff of course, but the buzz remains the same and you have much more controll rather than just playing a track,.i love it :)

example,.

on a laptop you can have your entire record collection, plus records you cant get, plus your own productions,

every song can be manipulated live in virtualy any way,.

this boils down to the "new" vs "old" technology argument. im totally old skool, i dont use vst plugins, or softsynths, i use real instruments were possible. When it comes to dj'in i use decks not a laptop full of digital music, i have love of vinyl, a love of collecting it, and a love for playing it - each their own i say, but iim impressed more by a tenically profound DJ on decks, than somebody with his laptop, AB live and his Evolution x-session.

I wont even buy a "mixed" compilation these days, because its not mixed really, each track is glued togather in Ab live or protools :-((

but people expect to hear things now you just cant do on decks.,

theres alot going on when its done on a lappie and abbleton,. its not just "press play"

and the evolution controllers are ok,but not integral enough.,,.

i use Faderfoxes., much better.

and i hasten to add to do those things takes a lot of skill and practice.;)

and lets face it,. turntables are def not gonna cut the mustard in 10 years from now.

Thanks for all the info so far guys (and charlotte).

I have looked into the possibility of Pioneers CD decks but to be honest Im too old school orientated and would really miss the feel of vinyl. Its that hands on approach that is drawing me back into the field.

Also I think for the level I want play at (bedroom and annoy neighbours :D ) decks will be enough, although I appreciate the info on the available pc programmes.

Please keep the comments coming in if you have any others though guys.
