Not been on a plane for 9 years. Don't intend on going in one again :D Love the idea of going fast etc but hate knowing i'm so far up in the sky (complete phobia of heights!)

Having said that, i'd love to go in a fighter plane! That would just be cool :)

Take up paragliding.

Once you've started falling from the sky when half the wing collapses, get spat out of a thermal and get caught in cloud suck you'll realise that anything a plane gives you is just tame in comparison.

Anyway.. I thought you guys were used to flying driving the Supes!

Dont do it mate it will drop out of the air like a stone over the north sea,and after you have passed out,you will wake and find yourself treading water in the freezing ice cold sea with suitcases and debris floating around you, then the moonlight will show you the sharkfins that swim around you, they will nudge you and test you pulling you under while you eyeball seaweed, then they will jump on you like a fat cop on a free donut, and you'll be gone forever.....enjoy your flight mate:p

I do about 12 trans Atlantics a year.. Been in some pretty bad turbulance had to do emergency landings, Failed landings and a freak storm while trying to loose altitude..

Some of it was grab your seat stuff and Im here to tell it.. Planes are the safest form of travel although alien to most people and some people freak out with a few bumps etc etc.

Ive worked out I have done well over 500 long haul 9+ hour flights and they have all generally been easy sailing so you really have nothing to worry about.

My wife is scared of flying, but she finds having a tall strong bloke sat next to her who squeezes her hand and kisses her forehead helps to take her mind off take-offs and landings. You never know it may work for you too.

All you have to do is remember two things:

1. Flying is safer than driving.

2. You enjoy your lifestyle and freedom (and a Soop to enjoy it in) today because 50 odd years ago, young naive kids used to jump into wooden crates every day and just get off the runway fully laden with bombs, then get flakked as soon as they passed the Dutch/French/Belgian coast, then attacked by 109s an, 110s, FW190s all the way to the target, then flakked again over the target and then do the whole thing again on the way home.

So stop being a pussy. Think what they went through EVERy SINGLE DAY!....and they had no choice and did it for poor pay too...

So now, when I am sitting on the end of a runway waiting for take off in a state of the art modern aircraft, I always think of them and imagine what it would be like in a 1940s aircraft. After that I just enjoy the power from the engines and the take off...go baby!.....

The rest of the flight is easy...

Its all in the head :)

I do 20-30 flights a year (for around 8 yrs) and have experienced all sorts of things on flights. One things for sure, its made me almost immune to flight nervousness :)

If you're travelling on a big jet (80+ passengers) then you have thousands of times less chance of injury than simply going to the shops!

I've only ever had one major issue happen on a big jet (burst tires after a very hard landing) but this didn't even require emergency exit.

Its the little jets/prop planes that can be scary as f*ck! Flying into a remote town in northern Sweden during a snow storm was a real experience. I was the only passenger onboard a 4 seater so asked the pilot why we didn't turn back - not enough fuel was the answer... I didn't interrupt him again until we landed!

This is straight up...four of us went out to Dusseldorf boat show in a little 8 seater from Hurn. Trip out was fine, then we got back on board to come home. They waited for clearance then revved up, and nothing. They tried again, we didnt move an inch. My boss who knew the pilots well joked that they had left the chocks under the wheels and we all laughed. Then the pilot throttled right back, came down the isle and went outside. He had left the chocks under the wheels. Id never had a problem with flying till then.:)

I was fine until a trip back from spain, the whole aircraft dropped about a foot mid air, that scared the crap out of me, then... we had to land and re-take off :( I didn't want to get back on the plane, but did :(

Not really keen on flying atm.

Aborted landings are not that unusual, better have the landing aborted than the pilot try it under dangerous conditions.

Turbulance is another thing - it happens all the time but I've seen grown men cry, puke and/or shake with fear when it gets rough. Its happens from time to time when the weathers bad.

he he, if that happend id be bouncing off the cabin walls:d

I bet some of the mechanics that work on the planes do stuff to freak people out, on the way back from Norway, the plane on the left wing had duck tape stuck to it :( needless to say I didn't stop looking at the wing the entire journey :D

Did anyone read about that woman that wanted a smoke and was trying to open the door?

Serious, it was in the news a while ago.

Didn't see that one, but had an incident with Jimmy Saville 4 yrs ago. He was on the opposite isle from me (business class of course  ), when suddenly he went nuts at a flight attendant after trying to spark up one of his huge cigars. A few of us tried to calm him but it wasn’t until the pilot turned up and told him to stfu that he calmed down :D

What did you say to try and calm him down, "now then, now then...."? :D

I hate flying, its a family thing, none of the male members of my family fly, they were all sailors (no puns, please).

Has anyonegot any tips to alleviate the dread (fear) that we might have?

im exactly the same.... a combination of no sleep and lots of wisky always helps me....even drunk it at 7 in the morning before :(

I hate flying with a passion, the sweat literally pumps out of my palms...

I just worked it out and I have made over 60 short haul and 8 long haul return flights in my life - that's a lot of  :scare: :scared: :faint: & BO...

Best way I handle the flights is to sit next to the window and watch what the plane is doing - short haul :burp: = :) & long haul :drag: = :superman:

Flying around China on their planes is not the way to cure a fear of flying ;)

That's the thing I always look for!

We had a particularly hairy flight back from Poland one year and I went to the toilet in the midst of it all (stupidly). On the way back the plane dropped out of the air and I pooped myself. The guy sat in front of us was crossing himself, I thought I was going to die. Then Mike looked down the aisle to check reactions at the front of the plane and saw the pilot making a not very great gesture at the throttle (he didn't tell me this till after we landed).

That was the only flight I've been on where the cabin crew looked vaguely worried.

Even on a flight back from Bermuda where our engine blew up the cabin crew didn't even change facial expressions!

best solution is to apply for cabin crew with a major airline !!!

thats what my wife did - she was TERRIFIED of flying.

Went for an interview with our national airline -told them she was terrified of flying AND she hated being away from home - she got the job !!

Now she's away anywhere in the world 4 days a week and she loves it- unbelievable, but true.
