jamesmark
Looking for some help and I am sorry for the description I have a rattle coming from the left bank of the engine it is there on cold start and goes when hot but comes back again at about 2.5k revs, the noise I can only describe as a bit of metal that is loose and rattling about against thick metal. I tried to get a sound clip but you cant hear it well on the clip as the engine drowns it out but here is an attempt best heard at 2 seconds and 10 seconds but is faint Link
grahamc
as you said, cant hear it to well, but sounds like mine used too... before I stopped switching the car on. I believe mine is a cracked piston, but I will only be able to tell once the engine is opened up.
geoffvalenti
Normally, the impossible sounds we diagnose at once, but miracles take a littke longer Get it down to someone who can actually hear the sound without it being attenuated by the damn AGC on the camcorder. Hope it's not too serious
Alex
Try using a breaker bar and pressing it against your ear and various points on the engine, it might help you pin point the noise. Or a stethascope (sp?)

ManwithSupra
I find a wooden broom stick works better as the sound seems to travel better not sure why though

Ian C
Does it rattle on revup, coastdown, or while maintaining an rpm? -Ian
jamesmark
Does it rattle on revup, coastdown, or while maintaining an rpm? -Ian On idle you cant hear it apart from on a cold start (waiting for engine to cool right down to have another go at filming it) when hot you dont hear but rev up to 2.5k the rattling noise starts and goes in time with the engine as you can on up the revs and stop we you bring the revs back under 2.5k As for driving it does do it on cold and yiou can here it but when hot you cant hear it unless you hang yourself out the window. dini_the_owl
you could try the front or rear knock sensors located on the passenger side of the block, both are about midway down and run paralel with each other, sorry but i cant hear your clip at the moment but i know these knock badly when gone, and its quite a simple task to elliminate. hope this helps and ill try to get ur clip working

Mike M
I had a water pump sound like that on one of my last cars. Just thinking thats driven off the fan on that side isn't it? It sounds like my PAS pump on cold damp mornings but thats the other side anyway.
Ric
possiblly waterpump yeah, if its off the road just strip down the front of the engine and replace a few parts, timing belt, tentioners, pump etc
