Syed Shah
Ok...... What are the largest tyres you can fit on 8.5" and 10"x18" wheels? Also, can anybody recommend a good place near MK to get them from and to fit them? Thanks in advance
AJI
Depends on trye profile height but I wouldn't reccommend any more than 2 size widths more than the alloy width. If tryes are too wide for alloys then they start to lip around the outside of the alloy which can be very dangerous when cornering. You will also find that stability at high speed will reduce quite a lot. Best to ask a qualified tyre fitter. AJI
Syed Shah
So.... would 285 be too wide for the back? It's on 265/35 at the moment.
Ian C
I've just had new P-0's on, and they too are 265*35 on 18" by 10" rims. They will go to 285's comfortably, but I wouldn't go past that, and the bloke who fitted the tyres agrees with that (Frisby's in Norwich - thanks Alex!) -Ian
Phil
255 is the maximun recommended width for an 8.5" rim.
Branners
and 255 on the front might make the car tramline like a bugger. Leon used to run 285x35x18 on his 10" blitz, if you go to a 30 profile expect to see the world a little more blurry as the ride will become pretty severe. If you have an import somebody like Pete Betts can recalibrate the speedo so that if you run a higher profile it wont throw the speed out too much. I believe the speedo signal is taken from the rear wheels. JB
Phil
Good point JB. I have 8.5 inch wheels all round and run 255's on the rear and 235's on the front. I may have to upgrade to 245's on the front next time though simply because my rims are very exposed at the front. Cheers,
Doughie
while we're on this subject... I have stock 17" uk rims. Can anyone tell me what the width of these rims is ? And can I fit 265's on the back next time ? this is only 10mm wider than the stock 255s. It might help reduce oversteer a tad and also protect the rear rim from kerbing *slightly* ?? anyone else running 265's at the back on stock 17"s ?? Lee Burley
Stock UK wheels.... 8 inch front, 9 1/2 inch back if my memory serves me correctly
Syed Shah
Thanks everyone. So I am going for: 245/40 on the front and 285/40 on the back. Does that sound alright?
GavinL
Hi.... I have just had a set of Eagle F1's fitted today by Micheldever Tyres nr Winchester. Having phoned a number of local suppliers and they proved to be by far the cheapest, fitting a set of stock sized F1's tyres for £418.06 all in. If you wish they can ship the tyres direct to you for about £16.00 a set.

Did you try Bracknell Tyres? I got 265x35x18 for £149 each. Micheldever were way more expensive (have a look at the thread for exact prices). BTW, something to keep your eyes open for. Many of these smaller operations/chains have links into tyre clearing houses. You can get a nonsense bargain on some tyres if the manufacturer is dumping stock. Phil Wall
That is exactly how I get my tyres. I ring my local garage/fitter every few weeks to see what he has. He some times sells rubber at silly prices.

Obviously I can't speak for everyone at Bracknell tyres but the guy who did mine was so careful with my Allies, you'd have though they were his. OK, I was watching him and he knew that, but I've been to other places that didn't give a damn who was watching. They too had me in and out in well under 30 minutes. Syed Shah
Problem........ Fitted the 245/40/18 fit perfectly BUT the 285/40/18 touched the arches on corners. So had the old tyres put back on, and am probably going to go for 285/30/18 on Monday. So will they *definately* fit or not? Thanks
Branners
30 profile is way too low, the ride quality will be terrible and the handling may get a little messed up. If you are having problems with clearance get the arches rolled, its fairly cheap and will be better in the long run. Can you not find a 285 35 profile? JB
Syed Shah
Branners........ Won't the 285/35 touch the arches too. Remember as the wheel has a big offset to get around the brakes, UK cars tyres seem to stick out more. Thanks
Doughie
found out the size of my rear rims : 9.5" wide. (17"s) So reading some of the above posts, it looks like it'll be fine to go for slightly wider 265/17s on those rear rims next time. Guest Martin F
I have 265x35x18's on the back of our MKIV. It is lowered and although the rubber is close it's not close enough to rub. May be an option for you.
Doughie
265's = yes 18" wheels = no ! (spent too much money already !!) so there's no reason to think running 265's on the back will do any harm then on 17" rims ? may help reduce oversteer a bit in extremis
Guest Martin F
Sorry Stu' my reply was to Syed's problem. As for 265's on stock wheels i don't see why not, as my rears are also 9.5".
