Sheefa
Hi all, Had my Supra less than a week, been running excellently but squealed the other day during startup. It was extrememly loud, sounded like a loose belt and not healthy. If you rev it fairly hard it goes away and driving it at normal pace is fine. Just seems to be when pulling off and idling after startup. It's had a new Cam belt fitted. So, I spoke to the owner and he said it may be a dry pulley or loose belt. Then he said that if i'd tinkered with the A/C system it must be that. I switched it off and he was right. Sure enough, if I turn it off and turn the fans down low it doesn't squeal at all. However, pulled out of the car park yesterday and it made a minor squeal again for about 2 secs. Any ideas as to what it could be and how to sort it? Thanks all. Greg;)
Paul_SWZ
I would just check your belts mate and get them adjusted. They may just be loose if the cambelt has been changed they probably fitted new auxilary belts. These stretch after a few miles and need re-adjusting sometimes

Paul_SWZ
Good point ! Perhaps the tensioner is starting to sieze or the belts are dry and cracked. I would inspect them properly and go from there.
jamesmark
I changed my belt, and problem solved and now the tensioner is away as it sits in between to marks and it is right on the worn out marker and have just got a new tensioner £92+vat

Sheefa
Thanks mate, much appreciated. I'm taking my Supra to Chris Wilson hopefully for a good check-over, brakes uprating and to with a bit of luck, do this too. Everyone recommends him so gladly he's not a rip-off merchant! Cheers again.

Scooter
the squeal could well be the crank pulley. These can separate with potentially serious (reads costly) consequenses. I'd have a look at it at least. Look at your belt from the side of the car and see if all the pulleys are directly in line with eachother and the belt. The crank pulley (if its not obvious) is the lowest one, look for any sign that this is sticking out nearer the front of the car than the others. CW will be able to tell you for sure but i'm just worried about it in the mean time.
TLicense
Check the belts for tension. If they seem OK then check the crank pulley dampener. This can make a fan-belt type squeal, and is usually knackered by inexperienced garages when changing the cam belt.
Sheefa
Damn guys, I'm a little scared? As I said turning off the A/C made the noise disappear and it only did it once a tiny bit yesterday, not at all today though when driving to work. I'll get it checked but do you think it's cool to drive til next weekend? At Global Gathering so can't book in a garage visit til then! Any other advice most appreciated. Help! TLicense
Open the bonnet, look down the front of the engine just behind the fan where you see the accessory drive belt on the lowest pulley. Whilst looking at that reach over and give the throttle cable a pull. If the pulley does what can best be described as "a wobbler" then the pulley is fecked. Let us know if it does this and then we'll go into how to replace it. Put simply you'd be looking at a couple of hundred quid. That's IF it does that. If not, it may just be belt tensions. There's probably a guide to how much you can push the belt when they're under the right tension on http://www.mkiv.com. Hope that helps.
