Fooking badgers

Recommended Posts

Time to state the obvious: RobSupra would have hopefully been able to tell the difference between a bag / badger and a child in the road! Therefore the argument that it could have been a person doesn't really hold any water IMO.

Both the damage and the demise of the badger are a shame - but it happens. I've hit a fair selection of wildlife myself, I'll always try to stop, but no way would I attempt to move out the way especially when going at speed..... asking for trouble IMO.

I think Geoff had that little outburst on page one because the entire first post had no mention whatsoever for the badger's welfare (in fact I was thinking "What about the badger" whilst reading it), if he'd just put a little disclaimer at the bottom......

;)

was on my way home about 20 mins ago when i noticed something in the middle of the road i slowed a little and decided it was a bag or something but oh no im not that lucky as i got closer i realised it was a huuuuuge badger, by this time i couldnt get out the way quick enough and it it square on.

Its to dark to inspect damage properly but i can see its damaged my bumper in numerous places then gone on underneath my car, its unkown yet if its damaged the underside of the car im keeping my fingers crossed until i check because this thing was huge. Looking at the car now it has amazed me at what little damage it has appeared to heave done but things may change.

Anyhow just needed to vent a little steam somewhere as i am reet pissed off right at this minute the kit and toyota respray is less than 12 months old now ive got to take it back and repair the damage the little shit has caused

mate i ko'd a dear on the motorway in my 100nx!

was coming off the slip road so had slowed to about 70, then it appeared out the trees

the sod smashed my front bumper, headlight, foglight, wing!

and i had provisionaly sold the car!

i know how you feel and totaly understand your lack of remorse!!!!!:D

Geoff do you slow down for low flying Moths on a moon lit night?

No, but I do try to ensure that something I think is a "bag" really is a bag before running it over.

What annoyed me about the post is that Rob said he saw something in the distance, made the wrong decision about what it was, then ran it over. :(

If it had just run out from the side of the road in front of him, I'd have felt sorry for it, obviously, but there would have been nothing that Rob could have done to avoid it.

Deciding (wrongly) that the object was inanimate, and probably having the time to stop, if he had come to the right conclusion that it was actually an animal rather than a bag, was the problem.

Although it is extremely unlikely that it could have been a person, the one in a million chance, should still be enough to make you slow down until you're actually sure what you are running over.

surely there isnt a person out there though that is only 1foot tall????

as i said i didnt go out last night deciding to kill animals i would never purposefuly hurt an animal, i havent got it in me.

i appreciate you saying that there is more i could of done to avoid the situation but it was either ram my car into a 12ft mudbankl one side of the road or the parked cars on the other. i did try my best to stop the car and the impact speed was very low but that was the best i could do under the circumstances.

Sorry for the damage to your motor, an sorry for the badger aswell :( . I slow down for anything in the road if I can, a mate of mine had the front spoiler an sump smashed up driving over what he thought was an empty plastic bag one night. It wasn't empty, it was full of bits of wood !. I seem to remember someone telling me you have to report hitting a badger, don't know who to, an don't know if its true either.

Injured?, drunk? lying in the road. I'm not saying it's all that likely, just possible.

I never said you did it purposely, Rob, just misjudged the situation probably by either driving too fast because it was dark, or not using enough "forward vision".

All I'm saying is that if you saw it in time to make the decision that it was a bag, you could probably have stopped if you realised what it was.

I'm really saying is it's better to err on the side of caution and stop for bags in the road, than run down badgers. That and the tone of your post, where you blamed the badger for the damage to your car.

You were driving it, you should have been driving in a manner to be able to stop if you saw something in the road ahead.

I'm sure if you'd have started today by posting.

"I hit a badger tonight, the poor thing died, I misjudged the it for a bag, I really feel sorry and its done a lot of damage to my car"

I'd have been sympathising with you all the way :)

Anyway mate, whats done is done, lets have no hard feelings and move on, hopefully learning from the experience ;)

Badgers are not rare, as they are becoming a problem, and there are talks of culling them, as they are getting out of hand with their destruction etc, plus they are nasty f##kers too,

they would NEVER cull badgers in the British isles,

not a sniff and if youve read that anywhere then i doubt its integrity.( not having a dig at you man )

@ Robsupra i do hope your car is ok ;)

about the nasty badger bit,. well there not predators,.. thats why there eyes are at the sides,so basically they only fight other badgers and anything attacking them.,like humans or dogs etc....

i would totaly love to see the Uk as it was hundreds of years ago - wolves,.bears all roaming wild - id give up using cars anyday if it ment all the animals could come back.

i totally agree with what you said it was a lack of concentration on my part and now myself and the badger have payed the price.

I apologise for the lack of sympathy in the first post, but this had only happened 10-20 mins prior to the post so i was still slightly peeved and shocked. believe me if i could replace an animals life as easily as a car bumper then i wouldnt think twice about it.

No hard feelings mate as you say whats done is done and the lesson has definately been learned.

once when i was 17 i saw a small cardboard box in the road and thought id squash it, for some reason it had 2 house bricks in it and destroyed the suspension on my old mini.

Moral of the story, dont assume!

I did that on my bike, the brick hit my rear wheel, the cross bar met with my genitals and the car behind me nearly ran me over. Buckled my wheel that did.

yeh right ! is there any internet proof of this ? if it is true ill be very disturbed as its disgusting .:(

Farmers have been 'getting rid' of badgers for years as well. I work in construction and have done a LOT of pipelines through farmland, and have heard the details from the landowners themselves. Though generally they favour something a lot less subtle than gas (i.e. a 12-bore!)

Sadly I'm afraid you're very much mistaken - they've culled over 30,000 in scientific studies in recent years. All the information you could possibly need about this (and how to prevent further culling) is here:

Badger Trust

It's lunacy IMHO to consider further culling when study after study shows it has little effect in reducing TB in cattle and in fact increase levels of TB in surrounding areas, whereas there are a number of other alternatives (such as farmers actually taking responsibility for their animal's health and the reconstruction of destroyed hedgerows) that have proved much more successful in reducing TB. 96% of the public opposed culling in a recent consultation exercise, yet the government still won't rule it out. But that's the fooking government for ya.
