New Brembo front & rear kit fitted...

Recommended Posts

Just got back from ChrisW's after having the Brembo front and rear brake kit fitted. Spec is as follows :

Front : 14" Cross drilled discs with 4-pot calipers

Rear : 13.58" Cross drilled discs with 4-pot calipers

Why go for Brembos? Well I wanted a proper front and rear brake upgrade and the rear Brembo kit is designed specifically to compliment the larger 14" front kit. I'd looked into AP's as ChrisW offered to make me up a rear kit to suit the 6-pots available but after using the template I couldn't be 100% sure the fronts would fit under the Blitz Z1's. I know Christian Dorian has the AP's and had to "shave" the caliper to clear the rims. However, Stuart Bailey didn't...Bottom line is I didn't want to mess around. Why not UK's then? Again, I wanted the most effective brakes I could fit inside the rims and as I like to use the car at speed (mostly on the continent) I felt this was the way to go. I'd also like to do some track days this year....

I've been very careful to bed them in properly and as it's been a rainy Sunday afternoon I haven't had a chance to use them in anger yet. I'm hoping for a nice dry day tomorrow so I can test them properly, will update then...:)

I think they look great too, very nearly chucked out the tv and put them on the stand instead :D

Very sweet setup Nick.

That rear looks REAL close to the rim too?!

Brembos are quite costly too, did you consider the Stop Tech system at all?

Geeza - I think the UKs would/will win a stop from 30mph or 60mph, but the Brembos aren't designed for that, more like repeated high speed braking or track days.

Gaz.

Did you get CW to do the work. Or did you do it yourself.

I fitted them, they are a nicely engineered set up, only issue might be how long they go before they rattle, as they are a floating disc assembly with spring steel anti rattle springs that will probably wear or rust away over time. Having said that, a disc of this size is far better floating than fixed. I thought it was a very well thought out kit, usual caveats as to what wheels it will fit under of course. I don't think it would go under 17 inch rims, which is a shame, as they are my rim size of choice.

I've put a few miles on them now and I'm very pleased with them. The Jap brakes had good bite but after a couple of big stops they were completely gone even with better pads. No fade with these so far and they feel great:)

They're a close fit but the clearance is fine, no issues there. I'm using the pads that came with the kit for now to see how I get on with them. No idea what compound they are other than being an intermediate pad but I'll find out.... It was always a choice between Brembo or AP for me and when the rear kit was released a couple of months ago that swung it.

By the way, the Volvo's are ChrisW's:)

Met Nick and saw these monster disks in the flesh tonight they're huge :) Very tidy mota Nick. Cheers for the ticket.

Some dick doing 40 in a 60 took my number plate on the way back for overtaking him on a straight. Pulled into the petrol station after me, parked up to my arse then started writing down my plate.

I got out and smiled at him as I went in to buy my Revels and wine gums :D

(was doing 60 when I past him I hasten to add... get a life mr tortoise!)

Not sure if plod will bother doing anything if he reports me but I did nothing wrong so would be a bit pointless.

I wouldn't worry about it, your word against his at the end of the day and the police won't be interested, at most keep an eye out for you. You Supe sounded very nice leaving the business park by the way :)

The brakes are fully bedded in now and I've been having some fun with them. They feel brilliant when braking at speed, nice and balanced and the stopping power is tremendous, be good to see how they compare to a UK setup. Probably a bit overkill for the road but come track day time they'll be superb. Something I forgot to mention is the calipers and discs weigh quite a bit less than the OE items which is a bonus:)
