Private plate transfer process?

Hi all, I will be going to see a Supra tomorrow with a view to buying. It has a registration which the owner wants to keep so If I decide to buy it tomorrow how long before I can drive it away on it's old registration plate?

If we need to send off the V5 to Swansea it could take 2 weeks or more.

Anyone have experience of these things? :search:

Usually a quick process if you go to a reg office and you have all the documentation it can be done while you wait, this is what my friends do when they reg imports and have done for me when i transfer my plate onto another import

Only prob i had this year was buying a Reg Plate from Company in N Ireland

Different rules to over here,

We bought a brand new RX8 in January ( 2nd one) and they wouldn't give me the Personal plate retention certificate (although i owned the Number after payment) as they have to reg transfer it,

Pathetic and total bo++cks sure they must be making on something though

So had to have a different plate on for when car was first reg ( not ideal for service books etc ) and then transfer again 2 weeks later...

This only applies to buying plates out of UK

Did same thing 18 mths previous bought a new RX8 (the 1st one) and bought a Reg over here, got a certificate and just gave it to dealer to reg it at first reg,

Trust me process is really easy and should be done same day for you

Just pay £80 transfer fee.

I'm currently doing the same thing but taking the plates off my BMW... in your case the seller of the car has to go to a local DVLA office with his V5, tax and MOT cert (sometimes the cherished reg cert is needed too just incase)... the local office will restamp part 10 of the original V5 form (New Keeper Supplement) with the new regy which he/she can then give to you if you purchase the car. In the meantime the DVLA will be issuing a new V5 back to your seller (approx 2 weeks), which he/she will then have to fill out with your details (new owner). You will then recieve the V5 form with your details on it (again in about 2 weeks)... as clear as mud??

The problem you'll have is when the current owner gives you pt 10 of the V5, you'll only have that to look at. If possible I would have a look at the full V5 before he/she heads to the DVLA so you can check it's all in order. Also, make sure the MOT is properly stamped with the new regy.

It takes a while and so far I can't find any quick way of doing it, yet.....
