Diagnostics Port

Just had a specialist try to read an error code. There is a problem with my diagnostics port....it doesnt have a TE1 pin (see pics). The guy (who has only seen this a couple of times before on Jap imports) is unaware of anyone who could connect to the port. He also says that its not an OBDII port full stop, and not really an OBDI port either.

Anyone come across this, if so, any ideas who could extract an error code using this port ?

Apparantly some VVTI's have the Pre-VVTI Diagnostic port in the engine bay and as you've said, the TE1 PIN is not connected and the port under the dash is not suitable for the conventional diagnostics machine. Speak to Gaz at Envy as this is what he found on Qaisars Supra when he needed the error codes checked at Japshow. Not sure if Gaz found a way round.

I've actually got three diagnostic ports. One on the engine (minus TE1 connection), a circular one under the dashboard which has various connections including E1 and TE1 BUT has no wires connected to it, and a third, true OBDII port under the dashboard. Ive just come back from the guy after he successfully obtained two Toyota specific error codes.

If it's what I think it is then it's right next to the other internal one but it's behind a panel.

 

On my car, its right next to the bonnet release, clearly marked OBDII...so clearly that I never knew it was there. See pic below...note, it was photoed in a mirror ! You can also see the third circular port which is not connected.

I'm gonna give you a big kiss if you've solved the VVTi error code reading problem!

Its worth mentioning that this guy Pete actually tried two types of OBDII diagnostics machines on the true OBDII port....the first one (his favorite one) came up with a communication error, the second one (his last-chance saloon one) got straight in there.

Do you need a diag tool to read these codes or can you read it from the flashing dash lights, like we do on the older model Supras?

 

I asked the guy that question, he said it was feasible (he was well aware of the E1 - TE1 paperclip trick on older ports) but he said there were 'risks' to try it on a OBDII port. He left that one up to me......

Im willing to try it, but I would like to know what harm it could do first ?

Also, my ECU is clear of faults at the mo...so the best I will get (if Im brave enough to try) is a steady blink. I assume this will still prove it works.....
