MrRalphMan
How do they work? An Air con until is just a heat exchanger, where do the standalone units exchange the heat to?
michael
Some of them come with a tube like the ones you get with a tumble dryer, we have a couple like this on small sites to cool the server rooms, they are quite effective. I've seen a few that just pass air over ice until it melts, I'm not sure how good they are but it sounds like a PITA.
MrRalphMan
Anyone used the 'EVAP' models? http://shop.prem-i-air.com/product_id/988771598/p/index.html
Lewis
that sounds like an icebox with a fan on it to me?
Scoboblio
I've got a standalone aircon unit and as Michael says it dumps the hot air out of the window via a stretchy pipe. It's a great little thing for cooling down a room before you go to bed etc, but waaaay to noisy to use all the time or when you're trying to sleep. Willson
I bought the biggest portable one I could find which was a 14000 btu airforce unit from b&q for £300. Very good but rather noisy though I understand they are all like this. I didnt think I would be able to sleep with it on but I can with the aid of ear plugs, much preferable to lying there sweating anyway. Damn heatwave - not a fan of the heat. Air con for the win ! edit - oh and they are very heavy so unless you are huge its a 2 MAN job. 47 Kilos and a huge awkward box.
MrRalphMan
2 Man, that's me buggered then...
Scoboblio
I've got a basic £200 one from Comet I think (LG if memory serves). Bloody heavy but wheels along nicely. Someone here at work has a large ceiling fan and swears by it - might not cool the air but gives you a nice breeze.
MrRalphMan
We've got a ceiling fan in the front room.. It's nice and maybe all we need in the bedroom.
Homer
Do not buy one of the coolers that uses ice, these are not air conditioning units. They basicially send out cold, but humid air, of course 20 mins after you switch the thing off (or the ice runs out) you'll end up with a hot room thats now humid too! I bought a cheap 7000 btu/h air conditioning unit from B&Q for £170, should have bought a 12,000 btu/h unit though as its a little too small for my living room. Good thing is its light enough for me to move on my own!
Paul
Thanks Guys... might be having a trip to homebase tomorrow. Got two stand alone from Homebase last year, do the job great and still going strong. Few mates and family got the same units now and all are well happy with them. As said before, they are noisy to run all night but depends what annoys you more, that or this heat? Supragal
Big fans are the way forward!! You don't have to vent or empty them!!
DamanC
£170 Gobbie from B&Q a few years back. One of the best things i ever purchased (excluding the mail order bride)
MrRalphMan
Big fans are the way forward!! You don't have to vent or empty them!! We have a medium fan that ossil... osila... moves around in the bedroom, the drawback to this is that as it's not on you all the time, you seem to feel hotter when it's not on you. Although it was nice to be laying there naked, rubbing a damp flannel across my body.. but that's another story. Prob due to the fact it's lowering your skin temp via evaporation and the room is then even hotter in relation when it's not on you.

I have this one, I tested the unit out in my living room and it worked great, I then moved it upstairs and found I should of put it back in the box as 47KG hurt by shoulder with the finger grips down the side of the unit - VERY cold it is For an average size bedroom I'd use a 9000BTU unit (minimum) - for my living room 12000 BTU (min).
