Clutches & Flywheels

Since my clutch started slipping in 4th driving to the Fleet meet on Sunday, I'm looking at clutches/flywheels. Having done a bit of (re)search, I've come to the conclusion it's a minefield! So many combinations of clutches and flywheels around.

 

From what I can gather I should have either a stock dual-mass flywheel and an unsprung clutch or a lightweight flywheel and a sprung clutch to avoid potential drivetrain issues.

 

I drive my car every day, often in traffic, so I don't want a juddery, clattery nightmare with a 1mm biting point.

 

So, who's got what combination of clutch and fly? I think current favourite is CW uprated clutch and stock fly, but I'd quite like a lightened fly I think if I'm changing it anyway, unless it brings too many "issues". There's also the RPS lightened fly and sprung hub 6 puck max, but I've heard bad things about 6 puck clutches and chattering when you engage them.

Forgot to say, the furthest I'd want to go mods wise in the future would be hybrids, running full decat, FMIC etc at the moment (at least I will be when I fit it!).

 

Anyone got any of the more obscure US clutches/flywheels, unorthodox racing, HPF (HorsepowerFreaks) etc, or the Jap ones (Blitz etc)?

I'd go for an RPS Max series with street disc, I was using this on my single turbo running around 600bhp for awhile until it started slipping a bit, no need for a 6 puck with your setup...there is a bit nasty to use for everyday use.

 

I was also running an RPS lightened flywheel which I just so happen to have up for sale at the moment, £300, I've also got a used Max series clutch cover £100, all you'd need then is a new Toyota clutch plate and a new bearing.

ive maybe got a hks triple going spare, drives like stock :baa:, will hold anything any supra can throw at it, especially hybrids. :innocent:

 

ive got southbend sprung 6 puck kevlar/kevlar with sb pressure plate and fidanza flywheel. this clutch has had some serious abuse and doesnt care. it slips beautifully, pedal pressure is fine (no monsterism of left leg), needs a bit more revs for smooth takeoff, fine around town, hill starts no problem, box rattles a little at idle when very hot, generally quiet, revs easily. the dual mass does add to that luxury car feel, but id never go back, love my setup.

Drivetrain noise is presumably because neither the clutch or flywheel is sprung? I thought having neither sprung was considered A Bad Thing? That's why I looked at the 6 puck RPS one, because it's the only one they do that's sprung.

 

HKS triple drives like stock? Hmmmm.... :looney:

 

Paul, what flywheel have you got now then, why the change?

Changing from the stock dual mass flywheel on the 3 litre engine is probably unwise. OK if it's a track car and you are happy to risk engine and transmission life and live with hings like crank failures, unwise for a road car that will do a fair mileage. They didn't hang that complex lump of cast iron on the back of the engine without DAMNED good reason....

Paul, what flywheel have you got now then, why the change?

 

I've now got an RPS carbon carbon clutch which comes with its own flywheel, need it for the extra power I'm going to be producing.....

I like Paul have the "RPS Max series with street disc". I have had this clutch fitted for around 2 years now and it has taken everything I have thrown at it. I must of done 50+ Drag strip lauches and it has not slipped once. Its a little heavier than the stock clutch around town but other than that its fine.

Eyefi's clutch sounds very similar in comparison to mine. I have a SB dual friction/lightened flywheel. The biting point is a bit fine if your not used to it. Flywheel tends to rattle but ony after a motorway drive, generally quite at idle around town except when excelerating through the 1500 - 1800rpm range when you get some rattle then.

 

Have done quite a few doughnut sessions in it plus I got about 15,000 miles out of the kevlar plate, which Im told is bloody good mileage.

 

Have to say though boys, this time last year there wasnt half as many people with uprated clutches, so some good feed back.
