mkirby
Are plasmas very expensive? Also someone told me that LCDs are getting better and just as good now anyway (he was a copper though ). the early ones did suffer but the latest ones are fine, the main thing they suffered was screen burn but again the newer models dont suffer from that. Price wise i would go as far as to say there a little cheaper!! you can get the newer model of mine with a stand for about the £1300 mark (panasonic) and at 42" its alot more for your money than a 37" LCD which doesnt have as good a picture LCD's are getting better and no doubt they will overtake plasma's in the next few years but then again theres newer technology coming out again which will take over from both again mike

Sony KDL40S2010U / 40in HD Ready LCD IDTV which looks like a very nice LCD anyone got any comments on this LCD would be great ......... People who have LCDs will generally slate plasmas as being unreliable and prone to screen burn. People who have plasmas will generally slate LCDs for suffering from streaking on fast moving images. When I bought my plasma, LCD wasn't an option and it was a pretty big investment, so I did my homework and demo'ed screens for myself. I saw some truly terrible plasmas and some excellent ones. You can pick up a decent plasma for under £1500 now - probably circa £1000 for something more run of the mill. My advice would be to demo both at a good AV shop with a proper demo room. Go a week in advance and tell them what you want. Demo it using one of your own DVDs that you know like the back of your hand (a favourite scene, for example) and see both back to back. Don't be afraid of walking away if you aren't impressed - its their job to sell, not your job to buy. My plasma has lasted for three years without a peep - but I treat it very carefully. imi
best to check both side by side yourself in a shop
mkirby
I agree its all personnel taste on what a screen looks like I have 4 LCD's including a 32" and a 27" but the plasma still wins for me Infact thinking of going to a 50" one soon
mkirby
best to check both side by side yourself in a shop totally agree, its amazing how the signal in some shope are great on the ones they "want" to sell and not so great on the ones they dont earn as much commission on lol best bet is go to a home cinema shop like seven oaks etc to have a good look Mike
Digsy
best to check both side by side yourself in a shop Do NOT demo a large-format screen using SKY or a composite signal (unless you plan so connect using composite, in which case you should be dragged into the street and shot ) Use a DVD, connected how YOU will connect - preferably RGB, or component. supra sam
best to check both side by side yourself in a shop Also check the brightness and contrast aswell so you get a true reflection of the set as retailers tend to wack them right up to compensate for bad lighting in stores, believe me i know i worked for Comet for 7 years! In the old days the commision thing was terrible i agree! You would not have beleived the amount of crap some of those salesman would come out with to close a sale Due to the pressure they were under from the managment, Most of them not having a clue what they are talking about either? Things are getting better tho Staff are now a lot better Trained and i know for a fact that Comet Don't actully work on commision anymore

Wez
Have you had a look on avforums.com? Yeah that After looking on there for some time I decided on a Panasonic 42" Plasma which i got price matched with John Lewis, also included a free DVD recorder and a 5yr guarantee. I also decided on the non HD version as currently unless you spend alot of money on a screen the HD signal is rescalled to fit the lower resolutions. Had mine a few months now and its been great. Supe
I had the Sony 37" wega engine plasma/Lcd cant remeber which one lol. The picture quality was ok but not as good as the Pioneer Plasma which I have now, I think the Pioneer ones have the best picture and the sound is just awesome. tbourner
Decided on an LCD now though, because I only want a 32" and because of the lower power consumption. What's the JL price match then?
outatime
John Lewis have a price match policy, the avforums lot use it to get good deals without the hassle of internet shopping. It really is worth spending a while on there, sorting through the alternatives and best deals.
Tricky-Ricky
From everything i have heard, stay away from the Phillips, i liked the picture quality but everybody on the AV forums has some kind of bad story about them.
tbourner
Bought a Sony Bravia KDL32S2010 yesterday! It was £1095, but KK electronics do it for £880 with free DVD recorder so I'll try and get some money back on the price match thing! At least you get 5 year warranty with JL! Watched a bit of freeview and a bit of Kill Bill 2 DVD and it seems very good on both - bit pixelly on the standard aerial freeview up close, but fine from across the room. Gotta learn how the DVD recorder works though.
