tbourner
My TV broke, 13 years old!!! Time for a new one. Which LCD should I go for? I've always liked Philips so will probably go for one of them, around 37". Up to £1500 in the budget.

imi
SAMSUNGS are Excellent, personally, if money isnt that much of an issue, I'd get the TOP line phillips. The analog picture quality is brilliant on those as well. I have two of those Samsungs...thats how much I like them
tbourner
How about the Philips 37PF7521D? Their Cineos ones are a bit expensive! Always though Samsungs didn't last long! Any other options?
imi
i've been using Samsungs since 2001. never had a problem and their new stuff is top notch. the phillips ones that I have checked out are the ones with pixel plus 2, those are excellent, the latest gen are supposed to be even better. i would stay away from their entry level stuff

michael
I'm a big fan of the Samsung stuff, they always seem to have superior pictures when you look at a group of TVs in the shop.
tbourner
Just been doing some research, there's loads on the R74 series they look pretty good.
Guest sunnyG83
Mate samsung dont do that model in a 37 but do offer it in a 40 lcd for 1499 just now at Currys/Dixons, this is by far my most requested and sold televisions in store and for good reason as i believe it out performs the philips gear by a fair margin and if you have sky digital it can cause probs for some philips pixel plus systems. would have DNIE over Bravia/Pixel plus/Viera offered by its competition but LG's XD engine is also good. My vote goes to the samsung mate:)

tbourner
Anyone know if that has the digi-box built in thingy or it's just 'HD ready' whatever that means? Do I need a set top digi box?
IDO
I am sure the digi-box is built in in the new models that have just come out..
edd_t
Anyone know if that has the digi-box built in thingy or it's just 'HD ready' whatever that means? Do I need a set top digi box? Dont think that one has a digi-box, was looking at similar a week or 2 ago, but i might be wrong. HD (heavy debt) teehee, or High Definition as its real name is just for superiour picture quality, you can now get SKY HD, and things like the XBox 360 and PS3 are all HD ready. supra sam
It has an integrated digital freeview box so you can receive the digital channels through your areial. This however will not be HD:( HD ready means it has a HDMI input (the new equivalent of a scart lead), so you will only get HD If you sign up for the new sky hd service or get one of the new HD dvd players coming out soon with a HDMI output. nice set tho
tbourner
Ah OK that's cool then, might get that or maybe the 32" version (saving money!!).
IDO
I am thinking of getting the 32" one myself.. first of all i thought of getting the 40".. until i saw how big the 32" was!!!! seems alot bigger than you would have thought!
tbourner
Yeah that's my concern now, don't want a HUGE TV in the lounge really. MY lounge is pretty big but still.
IDO
see if you can find one in a shop, just to have a look at (but buy on line! better prices).. think you'll agree the 32" is a fair size for most rooms!
mkirby
I still think that upto 32"ish then yeh LCD but 37 and over then plasma has a better picture quality!! i still have not seen an LCD which makes me want to change my panasonic plasma Mike
Scooby
I have just got one of the new black Samsung's I am very impressed with it plus Xbox 360 looks fantastic in HD!! Do be aware that the 37" screen run the same res as the 32" it is just streached across a slightly bigger screen!
supra sam
Just one thing to keep in mind guys, the bigger the tv the further away you need to sit to view it properly i.e for anything over about 40", you need to be at least 10 feet away to see it properly! IMO for a normal sized living room i think you would not need to go above a 37" otherwise it will take over the room!
