Turbo Problems

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm still having problems with my car. I seem to get a lot of lag when the first turbo spins up.

I kind of get 3 or 4 psi boost, hesitation for about a second, then full boost.

Anyone know what this might be?

Dude put some iridium plugs out of another car into my car before I picked it up. Can swapping plugs from different cars have adverse affects?

I'm gonna check the plugs tonight.

Do Halfords do decent plugs? If so what make/model etc.

Cheers,

Paul.

I could see how plugs could cause a misfire, but I'm not sure they're going to hold your boost down for a second or so... They'd be far more likely to stop you reaching full boost by causing a misfire, but you'd know about that, and not at stock boost levels, (unless the plugs are totally shot!).

I think there's another problem somewhere, but I hope not, for your sake! :(

Nope, it's when the first turbo starts to boost, I can feel some power, then hesitation for a second, then 0.6 bar. Second turbo kicks in normally and quickly.

Right,

A bit more info. I just took the car out again. The delay is from when the boost guage gets to 0bar, to when the boost starts to rise.

Another symptom is that when accelerating, the car judders a bit. Also when I let my foot off the accelerator and decelerate there is some juddering again.

The idle is also lumpy when idling

I've had a look at some HKS plugs. It appears that the gaps are going to be 1.1mm iridium or 0.8mm platinum, s40G I think??

Obvioulsy I dont want to buy these if it's not the plugs! :(

Cheers,

Sounds like it's gonna be a vac hose to do with the sequential system probably one that's involved in the prespool of #2 turbo as it only comes in once #1 has got going a bit.

Sorry to sound all doom and gloom, but just get yourself some cheapish NGK BKR7E's. They're well proven plugs and not too expensive to find out it's not the plugs...

A gap of 1.1 should be fine on stock boost, 0.8 is generally for higher boost levels.

Will it be OK to run the car on these plugs for a month or two until I can get a decent set and a service?

They are only 11 pounds a set. Is that right? sounds cheap to me!
