OT slightly - MW radio interference

Hey guys...

Just wondering if you could give a bit of advice if poss.

Im having awful interference problems using MW (medium wave) on my radio... as in I can barely pick up anything at all, just interference. Almost sounds the same as when in LW when not tuned into a station.

Curiously FM is fine (unless you put the heated rear windscreen on), though (try to) listen to MW and you can barely make out a conversation due to the interference.

Also, if I hit a bump, it can either worsen/improve reception on MW - though admittedly not by much.

Has anyone had any similar issues, or is there anything blatantly

obvious that I should look for.. i.e. a bad earth... or is it a case of

take it to an auto electrician and hope?

Thanks for any help :)

Paul.

LOL, just about!

Its useful for Radio 5 (909 and 693) on a saturday (live football) - especially when in different parts of the country. Also has talksport which has football commentary as well!

Anyway, further to this, Ive been out armed with my torch, and found by moving the wires, the reception alters. More worryingly, there appear to be many loose untaped (as in cut with pliers, and wire left bare) wires there. This was an install by Halfrauds for a b'day present for me from my fiancee around 2 years ago. Cost her £50! You wouldnt think so looking at the state of the wiring.

Okay, just been out to check again. Just for reference, the model is a Sony CDX-M670.

It does appear to be in a cage of some description, I think I can feel it from the back. It has two tabs at either side that appear to want to be pulled/pushed in, in order to move it.

The small red circles on the piccy are where the tabs are located:

Ill try to take a better piccy if I can find batteries for the digicam and a USB lead to connect it to the PC!

LOL, hehehe I was waiting for that :D Unfortunately, mine were taken off me when I was caught, the bastards ;)

Nar seriously, its a stock aerial, and its in my other car, a Rover 220 (I know, I know LOL - the supe is in Japan awaiting shipment) though Im guessing these sort of interferece probs would be kind of generic. i.e. bad earth, poor install etc.

Not to worry, just booked her in for a week on Weds, looks like a full re-wire is needed IMHO. I pulled the fuse out of the amp, and the interference dropped considerably. Also, due to the fact that the install looks dodgy - touching certain wires alters sound and interference levels - and moving wires at the back of the stereo (just pushing them) causes me to lose MW totally.

I cant believe I havent acted on this before, though TBH there has always been some sort of problem (head gasket replaced, new gearbox) with the bloody car so Ive never really had the spare cash to do anything about it! Fuppers.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, any more would be greatly appreciated, but no worries if not :)
