Ewen
What, other than spending all night on here ? I live for my fish, and I collect Georgian drinking glasses and decanters. I have to fan my flies if I see an engraved Newcastle baluster-stem at auction.

Homer
Depends on which group of friend I speak to as to which of my hobbies are considered sad! My long term mates who have no interest in cars consider anything social relating to cars (Meets/events, this forum, cleaning a car more than once a month, etc) to be extemely sad and dorky. I don't really have any other hobbies, other than computers - which ALL my mates consider sad and dorky. Can't win really!

Tannhauser
I could rant on this one forever. Whenever I hear person A referring to person B s interest as 'sad', there's no doubt in my mind that person A is, in fact, a prize jackass. What isn't a sad interest? Typically, if you ask someone this, they won't be able to articulate an answer too clearly. However, picking your way through their muddled thoughts, it usually turns out that 'going out' is definitely not sad. Even if you had the same alcohol-fuelled conversation that you had the previous evening, this is the pub, so that's not sad. Going to a club is also not sad. Both of these are acceptable because they stop the uncomfortable process of reflective thinking. The average person who labels hobbies as sad is very uncomfortable with thinking. Actually, it turns out that it's OK and not sad to have all sorts of interests, provided you're not too obsessive about them . Being too 'into' anything doesn't mean that you have commitment, expert knowledge, superb focus or any other virtues. Nope, it means you are not a fully paid-up member of the human race. You're wasting valuable time you could be spending in other utterly fruitless forms of leisure, such as getting pissed. To summarise, and with no offense to the thread starter: one should never apologise for hobbies and interests. 'Sad' is a way for deeply mediocre people, who find the concept of profound absorption in anything to be alien, to feel better about themselves. OK, now back to my model ship and stamps. RedM
I built a model ship out of stamps once. Is that sad? Seriously though, a great point well made.
