Taylor
I hear all about split rims being taken apart for refurbs......silly question but why? i understand that if you take them apart then all areas are easier to get to but do they HAVE to be taken apart? Thorin
I've often wondered that too, I want mine refurbing but most places either won't touch split rims or charge you the earth. It's only the outer rim that needs doing on mine really, tempted to have a go sanding them down and spraying them myself but I'd probably fuck it up. absz
i took mine apart when i had to do them as the stud/nuts get in the way and you cannot get in between the gaps to scrape all the crap off before spraying

Taylor
how hard is it to take them apart yourself, what is involved and how would i go about a diy job?
absz
how hard is it to take them apart yourself, what is involved and how would i go about a diy job? you do not have to split the rim itself just undo all nuts/studs take care not to throw the wheel around too much so that the jointing compoud is not disturbed remove the centre bit and then refit approx four stud/nuts back on to keep the rims together, once its all cleaned you can spray your centre bit and rim separate and then just fit them back together. ECK
i have refurbed my 3 peice rims and they look good! split all the bolts out the wheel (take the air out the tyres first!!) push out the centre dish (i had mine sand blasted) clean up and spray primer first then a good coat of color (youre choise realy) then get a polishing buff that fits in a drill (you can get these at halfords or the local parts depo) then get a cutting compound e.g autoglym metal polish. then get to work polishing the rim up (if polished if not just spray) once all paint and polishing is done get a tube of silkaflex sealant (again almost every diy store will have this) place a small amount of the sealant round the two mateing surfaces, mount the centre dish inside the rim (takeing care not to scratch youre shiney new paint job!) put back the outer bolts, then tighten bolts uniformly around the rim, once all bolts are tight torque them up to around 20-30NM. leave the sealer a few hours to dry then blow tyre back up! a short trip to the tyre shop to get the wheels balanced again AND WAAALAAA!!!!! jobs a good un!!! hope this has helpd you coz it took bloody ages to type lol;)
