My dad is currently on a two year contract in Israel. Worries me slightly. Especially when he sends me an email saying 'Everything is fine here, we only hear bombs very occasionally at night time. Hang on....I can hear something...it's a....'

Yeah he's a funny guy.

Give em their dues though - they know how to look after their troops - 1 soldier gets snatched and they bring out the tanks, artillery etc. Must really make you feel wanted and valued as a soldier :)

you mean any excuse to pull out the tanks and wipe out innocent men, women and children.

Look behind the politics and see it from a grunts point of view - you're in the shit and instead of abandoning you (as most govts would) your comrades pull out all the stops to get you back! The Israelies DO know how to look after their troops. By comparison, look what we did for our pilots who got downes in Iraq - sweet F A !!

obv if your lifes on the line - your going to want anything done to have you saved - the point i was trying to make was the excessive use of weapons against civilians to make a stand for "freedom" for one soldier.

Bet you would think differently if you were that ONE soldier

I entirely get what you're saying Penguine, but you also need to remember that in some situations it is very difficult to distinguish beteen 'innocent civilians' and 'non-uniformed combatants' - particularly when you are working against an enemy that hides within the local populace and uses them as cover (willing or otherwise).

Not saying that I condone Israels reactions - just that I admire their balls for saying 'bugger public opinion etc.' and doing what they feel needs to be done.

would indiscriminate bombing of Northern Ireland have been acceptable while there were terrorists there? When you start killing more civilians than terrorists its never a good move.

If it were one of my comrades then yes - I would!

Of course you would. Governments generaly don't.

How many state funerals has Bush been to, for those killed in Afganistan or Iraq? None. Why? Because he doesn't care. Why did the White House/Pentagon give the green light to rescue Private Jessica Lynch? Because it's good PR. They didn't make an effort for anyone else.
