FaithStalker
I aint the sharpest tool in the box when it comes to cars, but i do know the sort of stuff i need : * Single DINCD/Tuner to fit into the double DIN slot, but properly wired up to the stock SUB and AMP. Then underneath this In the second half of the DIN slot I want a * Turbo timer (one that keeps the engine running even if you alarm the car and leave it) * boost guage - preferebly an LED rather than a dial. * race logic Trac Control (when I can afford it). Problem is - I have : a) no idea how to fit it b) no idea of the "best" / "worst" of the "stuff" (I'd prefer a sony headunit but are they the best? ) c) where to get it d) who can fit it e) dimensions of said "stuff" to see if it all fits in ! f) what to do if it doesnt work :-( Apart from racelogic T/C I would mind if it could all come under 500 quid ??????? Any suggestion oh great and mighty fellow Supra owners?
Flipfinger
I've always thought Alpine were the best easily-available car stereos - can't go wrong with em....
Digsy
Hi Tony, Your best starting place would be a chat with Mr. Rolec because e has already fitted a single DIN unit with a blanking plate holding his boost guage beneath it. I have also fitted one in a slightly different way but with a cubby hole under it. If you mount the stereo facia behind the dash panel (a'la Rolec) you will possibly need to mod the stereo surround slightly. If you mount it in front of the dash panel (a'la me) you will need to file out the hole in the dash so that the front panel of the stereo pokes through. Depending on the stereo, it may be pre-tapped in the chassis sides and pick straight up on the screw holes in the stock brackets. I had to re-drill my brackets to allow the stereo to sit 10mm further forward then normal. I got my cubby hole from the same place that I got my stereo. It picks straight up on the stock brackets and sits neatly behind the dash panel. I have not seen one with my own eyes, but you should be able to get a blanking plate that will do the same. Rolec's is a Blitz part (I think) but Halfords carry a bewildering array of cubby holes and panels. It shouldn't be too hard to find one to fit. I don't know jack about turbo timers and boost guages (apart from knowing what they are of course) but as for your other questions: a) no idea how to fit it Yes you do! At least for the stereo, anyway. The mechanics of fitting a single DIN unit into the dash are well known to the group. I think Paul Booth had an aftermarket stereo wired up to the stock amp and sub, too. b) no idea of the "best" / "worst" of the "stuff" (I'd prefer a sony headunit but are they the best? ) I like Sony for domestic stuff but for in car I prefer the best I can afford. I have Kenwood right now, but I agree with Flip, Alpine seem to be the daddies. c) where to get it Try the Yellow pages for a decent ICE supplier. I'm sure SHOP! will sell the other bits. d) who can fit it You can! You really can! e) dimensions of said "stuff" to see if it all fits in ! The stereo stuff is standard apart from the fact that while the body size of two single DIN units stacked on top of each other may be the same as a double DIN slot, the actual installed size may be larger because of the trim surround that some stereos have around their front edges (this is why Rolec had to trim his surround, whereas I staggered the top and bottom units). NOTE: the hole in the dash panel is smaller than a double DIN sized body. f) what to do if it doesnt work :-( Well, if you fitted it yourself, go and have a stiff drink. If you get someone else to fit it, take it back and insert it into an orifice which will cause them the maximum discomfort until they get it right. Problem is that 99% of the installers out there (not aimed at anyone in particular, OK???) won't take the trouble to do a decent install by sitting back and thinking about the best solution. They will probbaly have a half decent solution that satisfies most of the people most of the time, and deal with the fussy ones as and when they come along. I'm sure there is enough knowledge in the BBS to empower you to fit it yourself. HTH
FaithStalker
Hey Darren, Thanks for the great Info. I think your right about the stereo - i could fit it myself, and I do own a drill to re-drill some holes so it will fit, I'd want a removable front panel - so i'd mount it in front of the dash me-thinks! My main concerns are the boost guages (i cannot find an LED one rather than a dial) and turbo timer installs.... and.....eventually - probably next year the RaceLogic T/C. me and electrics do not mix and i'm a bit scared at the though of having to cut wires and wire up stuff! plus what does Turbo Timer 1 or Turbo Timer 0 do? and the harness loom that you can buy for them? I wish the websites would describe them a lot better ! And will it work with my Alarm or will the alarm go off if the engine is still running?!?! Just the simple things as well, like if i put the turbo timer below the stereo - will it overheat? how do I actually physically put it there DRILL? GLUE? Blue-Tac?!!?? and *embarassed question* if i get a blanking plate, how do i effectively cut the plastic!?!?! With Scissors? will tourque IC fit these for me??? Well, Dean (aka Rolec) and I have exaclty the same unit and it has a removable front panel. We just chose two different ways to skin that particular cat... > My main concerns are the boost guages (i cannot find an > LED one rather than a dial) and turbo timer installs.... > and.....eventually - probably next year the RaceLogic T/C. One for the group, this. Apart from the range they record, are BPG's anything special? Would a digital pressure guage from, say, RS or Maplin do the same thing? Might be easier to find one with a digital display from there. > Just the simple things as well, like if i put the turbo timer below the stereo - will > it overheat? how do I actually physically put it there DRILL? GLUE? Blue-Tac?!!?? > and*embarassed question* if i get a blanking plate, how do i effectively cut the > plastic!?!?! With Scissors? Its actually quite roomy behind the dash - especially with e single DIN unit fitted in the top bay. There should be plenty of room there. With the bottom stereo bay vacated, you will also have a selection of mounting holes to choose from in the stock bracket. If not, there is no shame in buying a *good quality* double sided adhesive foam or velcro pad and sticking it in! You can cut any shaped holeI by carefully marking it out and the using a small drill to go around the inside of the profile. Then file out the lumpy bits. If whatever you are mounting has a bezel that mounts from the front you can be a little bit less fussy. If you just need to cut a big round hole you can buy hole cutters from Homebase. Try to use a drill with a soft start trigger, plastic can grab the drill bit when it bites!
THOR Racing
Well TRL Performance to the rescue :-))) >My main concerns are the boost guages (i cannot find an >LED one rather than a dial) Check out the development of my AFRi. This has two rows of LED's, currently used to display Air/Fuel Ratio and the other to display injector duty cycle. But in the end it's just a microprocessor, an analogue to digital converter and two rows of LED's! I can program it for pretty much anything and display anything I can sample with the A/D chip. So given some more time to finish the development this would be a LED style boost guage. How does that sound? Check out http://www.trlperformance.com/afri.html Obviously it'll be in a box and stuff eventually. But you get the idea. Currently it's size is 100mm*50mm, but this maybe subject to change depending on available enclosures. Regards Pete
FaithStalker
I think I have found the LED i was looking for - http://www.spa-uk.co.uk/design/instru6.htm although no prices and no indication if it would fit a supra!!!!! TRL - chip aint much to look at but as you say i'm sure it would look good when its boxed and actually has an LED display ! So - what Turbo Timer should I get ? I heard the HKS one is good, and one model has some 0-60 times and other stuff as well - but i want one that keeps the engine running after i leave it/alarm it. maybe thats all down to the wiring of thing. Has anyone installed a Turbo Timer like this themsleves?? how easy is it? any special tools!!?!?? Stereo wise - i think alpine are the dogs as well, but i can get a discount at sony (50quid or so) as i work there. I also do like thier reversible graphic equalizers ! Flipfinger
Did you ever sort out the rattle in the boot, Mr Jefford? I've sorted out 2 Supe's with rattles in the boot and they've BOTH been those poxy hatch rubbers.....
FaithStalker
I changed the back rubbers and the rattle is still there, I sorted out the front rattle, i big piece of rubber stuffed in between the windscreen and the dash, although that has now caused a much smaller rattle near the petrol gauge - another piece of rubber should fix that though ! I'll find that dam boot rattle soon - will have to let the misses drive while I root around in the boot !
Flipfinger
Mr Jefford and his mental modded rubber Supra.... Taken everything out of the boot and driven it stripped down listening for rattles yet?
Doughie
isn't rooting in the boot while the ve-h-icle is in motion illegal ??!
THOR Racing
>TRL - chip aint much to look at but as you say i'm sure it would >look good when its boxed and actually has an LED display ! Ummm! I beg to differ. It has got LED's! They are all surface mount (see the second picture on that page) and will be viewed through a translucent window in the box. This way i can have a range of stickers that mount over the top to have bars, dots, triangles, increment bar (like on a volume knob) So I think it'll actually look better than just a row of round LED's sticking out of the top of a box. But you'll see this when I actually get it finished. Pete
Adam W
It certainly is - when I was 17 I was giving five of my mates a lift to a party in my fiesta (one in the front, two in the back, two in the boot!) and I got pulled over by a couple of traffic cops. They pointed out that I ws breaking the law by having unrestrained passengers in an overloaded vehicle, asked where I was heading, and said "Well, it's not far, we'll give a couple of your mates a lift"! Got a police escort the rest of the way there as well
FaithStalker
maybe i'm looking at the wrong thing TRL - cos the page you given to look at is just 2 printed circuit boards ! Doughie - Yes its illegal. unless yout stopped, when its not illegal, its just cramped, sweaty and over too soon. *ahem* anyway................Turbo Timer information, anyone got any. Then all I need to do is to get someone to fit this all for me at a nice cheap price OH i think I am going for the SONY CDX-CA850. no buttons, but you get a stick remote control, AND a card remote control and a nice big graphics display - plus i can get it for 189 quid !!!!! Halfords say that I need an a) Connector Adaptor b) an Arial adaptor I knew about (a) but not about (b).

DArby
Mr Jefford. Its not too bad to do all the things you want to do.. Racelogic do two kinds of blank for the bottom DIN. 1 - three punch out 54mm ?? - circles suitable for a range of Blitz gauges, which inclue a boost gauge, like what i got They also do one with 2 ? x slots for Turbo timer, and 1 x Circular knockout for Boost gauge. They come with a piece of sticky back, fake leather, plastic which sticks over the plate after you have done the knocking out, and is trimmed with a craft knife. This link http://www.rolec.co.uk/cgi-bin/ikonboard/topic.cgi?forum=9&topic=6 shows pictures of mine in situ. This link is the how to do it one. http://www.rolec.co.uk/cgi-bin/ikonboard/topic.cgi?forum=9&topic=1 The boost gauge was ok to fit, there's a big grommet to get into the engine bay, you can pick up the feed for the light in the dash of the cigar lighter. I'd be happy to give you a hand as i've been in and out of that side of loads of time now - but i think you're a tad far away - i'm Milton Keynes way Dean.. (a) The connector adapter they are talking about will fit into the ISO block behind the stock stereo - but be careful because from what I know about the Supra stereo wiring from Paul Booth this will not drive the slave amp. It will drive all 6 speakers directly. If that is what you want to do then the Halfords one is fine for it. It even carries the dash illumination dimmer for when you turn your lights on. (b) Some stereos come with one already in the box and you fit it if you need to.
